Eat a fairly heavy meal before going out drinking (but get some caffeine in you as well), and stay away from beer for the long duration of the night. Beer will make you more tired, its like liquid bread, and the more tired you are the more apparent your intoxication will become.
I can drink 4 beers one night and feel totally plastered, and I can drink 10 shots of vodka and be way more coherent. Its all about what makes you feel tired.
I've put down a half-gallon of vodka in a night (and was into a fifth when I remember them making me stop), didn't vomit, and was only blacked out conscious for 3 hours (apparently I beat the shit out of a wall and refused water and my friends had to put me in bed). That is about my limit. On a fun night I'll drink half a fifth usually, but I can do more (and this is with very little training, the first night I bought a bottle of vodka for myself after turning 21, I drank the whole thing... ).
On the other hand I am genetically made up of Finnish, Norwegian, Swedish, and Scottish and come from a long line of heavy drinkers, so that might have something to do with it.
