Abstract: DJs are the new rock stars? Maybe. (Although chefs are already the new rock stars.) Still, the big name DJs do seem to be living pretty large, what with the constant travel to exotic locations, goofily-clad fans, eager women, drugs and parties. Just swap MacBooks for guitars and it doesn't look so different from the way Zeppelin rolled in 1973.
In my opinion, electronic dance music allows anyone to express their own griefs and aspirations with less clutter. The advent of technology allows even the untrained to gain insights into the production process and even create masterpieces with the use of a Macbook. It's cost efficient and evolutionary novel.
As a digital record owner I'm overwhelmed with new demos on a weekly basis, it's exciting if you're open minded and willing to work with artists in cohesion.
i duno, i don't listen to a lot of music anymore, but that's not from giving up. I can't find any DJs that I like anymore. I wouldn't say that EDM is thriving when people like me (with very simple tastes) have a hard time finding a DJ that isn't stale.

that's why you listen to those that are somewhat more "underground".
Out of "old timers", I still find that J00F finds ways to make shit interesting every time. Also Binary Finery shows are great, Airbase has some nice sets, Jorn van Deynhoven can be quite impressive... just to name a few.

I don't see why you'd have to listen to DJ's at home anyway. Really, their job is to entertain people at parties. There used to be a big market for well executed studio mixes as well but that's pretty much gone down the drain and replaced with podcasts and radioshows and the like.
Thing is, if you're just listening to music why would you have someone else pick it out for you anyway? No wonder you can't find anything. Just go out there and look for it yourself. There's no excuse to be lazy about something you're passionate about.

It's like anything else in life. If you want to find the good stuff you have to dig deeper.

the corporate sponsored scene that revolves around the music is thriving if by thriving you mean financially because those billboard charting pop tunes with a dance beat are not what i would call thriving if art is the criteria.
Except for a about 10 artists , sales are a joke. What is being sold is hype and the chance to party at the craziest party you've ever been to and all your friends will be there so don't miss out.
The EDM scene is fucked in so many ways. Not doomed but just fucked in how it operates.
It probably has to do with a couple of things mostly.
1. Logistics, edm is easier to make. That doesn't make it inherently better but if people like both edm/rock equally and financial concerns are present people are probably going to make edm or dj.
2. Piracy, net shopping & net radio making people listen to less mainstream music generally. It's much easier to listen to a type of music you can't find in cd stores when you can still buy cds and listen to lots and lots of music. Again this is logistics I suppose.
Perhaps edm was always good it's just people's tastes have gotten better and it's much easier to access?
