Markus Schulz Marathon Set @ Guvernment [Review]

I can't seem to find a review? For those lucky enough to go, how was it?

No lineups when we got there around 11. Markus was already on and playing a pretty decent warm-up. By 1 the place was just rammed and turned into a sauna. This was mostly due to the crowd that came in after Digital Dreams. Lots of pushing and shoving, especially by the main room washrooms and stairs. Reminded me a lot of the old days when we affectionately referred to guv as the sardine can. At least there's no more sweat-rain

Being on the dance floor got a bit too much to handle so we spent most of the time in the upstairs lounge. It was busy up there too but at least there was some breathing space. They really should not be closing off access to Skybar. It just made the situation worse for people who wanted to escape the heat to go outside for a while. Meanwhile, Markus was still playing pretty a consistent set, however, the heat and overcrowding made it pretty tough to enjoy.

Finally, 4 o'clock rolls around and this party takes on a whole new life. There were stills lots of people even though the crowd had thinned out but it was manageable. Markus really starts laying down some bangers. He maintained a consistent, pounding bassline and threw in a bunch of classics into the mix. The crowd was eating it up. Thank goodness they were generous with the nitrogen cannons by this point because the crowd needed some serious cooling off. At one point, Markus comes on the mic and says, "it might get a little weird in this rabbit hole but it's a friendly one."

I left around 6. My friends and the last couple hours made this venture worthwhile but I imagine next time I would buy a ticket in advance and just show up for 3. Best way to avoid most of the nonsense altogether.

Note about guestlist cover. Pretty much all the promoters were advertising that guestlist was $30. In fact, it was jacked up to $45 when we went to pay. The girl in the ticket booth laughed when I mentioned that several promoters, who shall not be named, were going around telling people that it was $30. Oh well... I don't know if we were lied to by the promoters or Guv management were being douches but that's just low.

Very glad we came out to this. Ive been looking forward to a marathon set from Markus for a while and this was right up there with one of the best sets I've heard (trance atleast) this year.

What I find great about Markus though is that in a set like this he refuses to be confined by the boundaries of a particular "genre". There was lots of trance through the night but there was also a lot of really great harder techier music. I think its safe to say that Markus is easily one of my favorite DJ's though I think I would only prefer to see him play longer sets moving forward.

Holy crap the crowd was ridiculous. it was slammed inside that place and we must have spent a good 2 hours on the patio crammed up against a wall. This was my first visit to Guv in months and probably only the second one all year and I realized how much I didn't miss this aspect of the place. So much ignorance on that patio it was unreal.

I also would like to point out that It was annoying that there was a $15 difference in the price that was mentioned prior to the actual posted guest list price. Not good business practice at all. I could certainly pay it....but it did leave a sour taste in our mouth.

4am is when this party really took off. Outstanding music and a little more room to move with Danny Tenaglia "Be Yourself" being a major highlight for me. I simply love that song and despite the absence of the epic vocals, it was my fav moment of the night. Markus also dropped Grindhouse at about 6:15am which was another unexpected surprise.

Its been a while since we saw that sun stream in through the patio doors so certainly some great nostalgia there.

That being said I'd love to say that was my last time at Guv, but I will stop short at making such statements....

Nice reviews guys thanks for sharing. I've been able to catch him for a 5.5hr set in Ibiza from his mini-solo set at Privilege but nothing to the tune of 8+ hours which I'd love to see someday. He really brings it. Have listened to his "Rabbit Hole" sets he's uploaded on his soundcloud page and they sound like an adventure within themselves. Can't believe hes doing a 12 hour solo set at Tommorowland, looking forward to hearing a part of that set.

yup, all about the space terrace. it's his home arena.

okay so i came up from NYC for canada day weekend and went to GUV against all of my canadian friends' warning. i knew what it was going to be like (same thing happened to pacha here, was great, amazing place, then overrun by yolo candy ravers). and it was exactly that.

got there around 2am (was at digital during the day). long line outside, but we just cut it because none of the little kids had any idea/were paying attention. now, i've heard about Guv for a while and i just wanted to check it out. it's such a legendary place and even though i knew it'd basically suck, i wanted to see it for myself.

the actual club is amazing. i loved seeing the little hallway to get in and behind it, this HUGE area with people standing on teh speakers (to me, the legendary Guv picture), fog everywhere, lasers. god DAMN the place was packed. it was an oven. and of course, #TranceFamily noob crowd. whatever. found my friends, got a drink (took 10 minutes to get to the bar) and that point, asked to go to the outside terrace before i died. it legit took 20 minutes to get from the bar on the back right to the other side and outside. even when i pushed forward, there was nowhere to go. lolz.

was outside for legit 2 hours. packed as well, but fresh air was nice and they had speakers with markus. some legit weirdos outside, but nothing i havent seen in underground warehouse parties in brooklyn. nothing phases me at this point.

went back inside around 5am and there was finally some room. danced on the main floor a bit until the end of the night.

markus was pretty good. some great moments and some eh moments. as expected, when youre playing that long there are going to be parts of teh set where the DJ is deciding where to take it. one of the highlights for me was definitely age of love. what a comeback that track is making this summer, eh? rabbit hole came a bit too late and wasnt as banging as i expected. he dropped adam beyer - human reason and a few other bangers, btu then added some cheesey vocals that didn't belong in a "rabbit hole". he was good overall but not amazing.

i did LOVE how much fucking fog they were spraying at 6am. it was hilarious. it felt so good! lol. not going to lie, seeing markus as just a shadow behind the decks in a fog filled room was badass.

would never really go back there (they're moving anyway, no?) but all i could imagine the entire night was how much carl cox would destroy that room. it was MADE for that big room techno. i can't even imagine how insane it must have been back in the day when cox, carola, diggers would smash the place. wowow!

/end

Many legendary nights at the Guv. Digweed is IMO only night worth going anymore to the Guv. Schulz 2007 Armada Night set is one of best I've ever heard at that place.

Was great to see friends, but was a rather unmemorable night for me.

- Was not happy that I had to pay $45 cover, when all the promoters were advertising $30. Any of you care to explain?

- Lost one of my contacts while rubbing my eye very early on. Counldn't see much of anything out of one eye. First time that's ever happened in 14 years of partying.

- Place was rammed, nothing unusual there. But spent most of my time up in the upstairs lounge (which is unusual for me). Eventually made my way down around 4pm and the place was still rammed.

- Couldn't take it anymore and left around 4:30.

- Music was quite average, IMO.

- On my way home, discovered that the air bubbles in the sole of my Nike's had popped. These had been my partying shoes for the last 14 years.

- I think I'm done.
