There are a lot of djs who have been around for a long time. It depends on there production skills in my opinion, and being at certain places at a certain time, remixing certain artists at the right time.
Everyone can dj, its not hard to find, and everyone now adays is producing, but not everyone is producing successfully. Producing itself takes time to learn, adjust and expand. I believe that is why most big djs have been around for a while before getting noticed, not until they started producing tracks or remixing many different tracks consistantly, with a few exceptions.
Some people in my opinion pick it up very, very quickly and at a young age, for example Armin... He is a very talented person when it comes down to trance music. Although I must imgagine he also worked his ass off to get where he is. Shit, even now he works his ass off, always playing live sets, and now talking about doing that 12 hour set.

I have to agree with the previous post, production is definitley where it is at. Another big part of it is networking with people who know people etc etc. If you aren't lucky enough to know people just continue doing what you do and possibly one day you will get recognized. Its always good to start producing or even tinkering with virtual production (reason, fruity loops etc etc) just so you can kind of get a handle on things and a head start. Armin actually got very very lucky. He had just finished law school and was going to become a lawyer and i forgot the exact details but somehow he became what he is today in a matter of 2-3 years. Keep in mind though djing was alwyas a hobby for him. Also what 12hour set is he doing? or planning to do?

true.
Just when you thought all you needed was a pair of decks, a mixer, and a mic to start your path to becoming the next great DJ. . . . .

it's going to be a producer/dj...
someone who will bring a new sound into the electronica scene

maybe not "inventing" a new genre, but doing something different that noone has heard before

well, the last 2 (now) big name DJs to break through the UK scene just happen to be Matt Hardwick and Eddie Halliwell, and I hardly think u book Hardwick because of H2J...

and to break through u need to be good and i mean fucking good, and know some handy ppl

this industry is all about who you know, not what you know
and if you're good, that'll make it a whole lot easier

i know some shitty djs who've gotten some amazing breaks
then i go to hear them play and it's like, i can play better than that... with no monitors!

hopefully my big break will come
