Go on the ntl site or whever u got the drivers for yr modem from and get the latest versions, especially if u need ones for xp.

These should be easy to get hold of

Bu tmake sur eu have done that before u reformat, worst thing i always do is stuck without a modem, so have to use my dads laptop to get drivers etc

So be prepared, and befpre formating make sure u save all stuff u want, including any new font su may ahve installed, progs instal files, my documents folder, internet site favourites, these are the main one i forget

I would have thought more from you jon. If it is usb its just a case of plug and play

have the modem plugged in when u instal xp, and with a bit of luck xp will have the drivers in its driver database, and instal it for you.

If not u will need to find the ini file, or woteva it is, and that is usually why u need to download the drivers. Then just instal new hardware option as normal in windows

im getting an Ethernet card for my modem, as i have 1 usb being used for my scanner and the other for my Mini Disc.

i tried searching for the modem drivers on google and i found out this

from NTLs site.
quote:
Windows XP operating systems, both Home and Professional, are based on the Windows 2000 operating system. This means that before you upgrade you should ensure that you have proper drivers for Ethernet adapters and USB Cable Modems.
does this mean i should try get 2000 drivers

to install the xp i am clearing my hard disc and installing XP full as i did not get the upgrade.

Thanks for your help so far guys.

No. Doesnt work like that, it means that the win 2k driver can be modified to work with xp, but wot is the name of yr modem manufacturer? model name like mine is generic 56k data fax blah blah blah

So give me the info, and if u cant find it, i will

just spoke to my dad who has winxp running with a cable modem via a ethernet card, it just decteded it all automaccally wen he booted the pc and works like a charm, and as fly says usb is plug and play an dshould do the same, so just wack it in and watch it all install its self

if your going to be using the net make sure u have a firewall installed such as zone-alarm, as it is more easy to configure than the one in xp
