Hello!

MP3 Encoder!!!!!,i use Musicmatch, for recording my vinyl, tapes, and radio directly onto my laptop, it can encode from 64kbps to 160kbps, WAV, and windows media. is this ok or is there better software out there..
what do you use????
Also i have a lot of good sets i have recorded onto VCR (Video tape) before i got my laptop, but the radio reception is not the best so what can i use to clean up the signal, cut and edit tracks/sets once i encode it. and where can i get it? would appreciate your help

LAME, with the RazorLame frontend is definitely the best sounding MP3 encoder available ... and it's free =). Check www.r3mix.net for more info on high-quality MP3 encoding.

Any of the sound editing proggies available can clear up a bad recording (to a certain extent, don't expect great results though !) - I'd recommend either SoundForge or Cool Edit. The only thing with these utils is that you have to learn how to use them properly to get decent results, they won't do things automagically for you.

peace

thanks, i will give it a go, it has been dificult getting descent recording levels without clipping using musicmatch. although musicmatch is good for burning downloaded mixed mp3 trance cds to cdr, it joins each track to the next without a gap, click, or any noise if the tracks you have downloaded are complete it is difficult to hear transitions between tracks.

The best thing to do is to record the audio in a sound editor (abovementioned soundforge and cooledit are really good for that). This gives you the opportunity to polish up the sound (ie. normalize etc.) before you convert it to MP3 ... this way you get the best possible sound quality.

Cheers Bud, one last question, i assume you mean record into a WAV formatt using Soundforge? then enhance then encode to mp3.
The sets I record off radio are 2hrs long (that would be a 1.2gig WAV file?), and my laptop is a P2 300mhz, 198meg, 6.4gig, will it do the biz or will it choak my system
Regards

Yup that's exactly what you should do ...
and yeah, uncompressed audio is pretty damn huge but that's pretty much the only reliable way to do sound processing before compressing it in MP3. Your comp should do fine, just be sure to have loads of free HD space before recording and be patient 'coz sound processing takes a while. I'm doing my audio stuff on a Celeron 333 and everything is working o-tay, just takes really long.

Oh and another thing when recording be sure to set your recording levels (in Windows mixer) so that your signal never clips (both CoolEdit and Soundforge have VU / clipping indicators), or else it will sounds really distorted.

I think you can get trial versions of both CoolEdit and Soundforge off the syntrillium (sp?) and Steinberg websites (the addys are probably www.syntrillium.com and www.steinberg.de) and then look for a crack on astalavista.box.sk

peace

Hey Skywarp, do you really think LAME is the best ?
I'm using Fraunhofer IIS professional, I always heard it was the best. I don't know LAME yet. Did you compare these two or why do you think LAME is the best ?
Greets,
Dawn
