Robert Elster (Vibrasphere) - Still Breathing LP

Marginally surprised there isn't a thread about this yet. Robert Elster, formerly one half of Vibrasphere, releases a new solo album on J00F Mantra that sounds very much like Vibrasphere:

I haven't had chance to listen yet, but surely someone here has. Come all ye trance addicts.

Wasn't overly impressed by this to be honest. There are some hints of brilliance like in Trails but overall it's a disappointment for me.

Have to agree with the above. Its solid but gets a bit same-samey after a while. 1 or 2 standouts that are pretty good but missing some of the magic of earlier vibrasphere work IMO

I saw it the other day.
It's definetly one of the best trance releases of 2016.
And it sounds good old Vibrasphere. Just full on. No bullshitting around.

Having had a listen, I think it's way too full-on. Most of the old Vibrasphere tunes were very slow-burning and stripped down. This is just a wall of noise by comparison. Disappointing.

Maybe I'm missing the context but full on in what sense? As in Full On Psy? Don't think so. This is straight progressive trance ala Union Jack/Art of Trance style but just not as polished or creative.

Not full-on psy, but just very busy, high energy and pretty relentless from the second track onwards. If you compare it to Vibrasphere tracks like Newport or Landmark (which teases you for about 7 minutes before finally giving you an acid line) it sounds exhausting.

And this is not progressive trance, and neither was AOT/UJ.

I don't want to start a long argument about this but in what way are they (all 3) not progressive trance? Curious to see how you classify this...

Art Of Trance and Union Jack started before "progressive trance" was any kind of recognised thing, and certainly had little in common with progressive house of that era. And even in the mid-90s when progressive DJs really did start to pick up trance, AOT/UJ weren't playlisted that much compared to the likes of Fade, Edge Factor, Slacker, Andy Ling, LSG, BT, PVD et al who really defined that period and to my ears sound very little like the classic Platipus thang. I recognise that Platipus was something different to German trance but it's easier to classify Simon Berry as simply "acid trance".

You could safely call this album prog-psy, but that's a long way from progressive trance and the distance is only growing.

+1

This LP is serious business

Nice to someone still able to put down some sweet trancey melodies.

edit:

he recently did a remix for Carbon Based Lifeforms
