obligations to mixing Rap/R+B/Pop, ect...

I DJ'd a highschool party a few weeks ago thinking i was only goi to mix in trance and stuff, but i got all these requests to play like rap and pop and stuff. Does anyone know how to mix this stufff together?? I really dont want to fad out one track and then just start up another one with that like 5 second break in between. what are some different styles i can use?? im so used to mixing 4/4 beats at like 130-145 bpm, not ones that are like down in like 120s or even lower. HELP ME!!!

Use your creativity and imagination man, when I just feel like listening
to tunes without practicing mixing or whatever I blend lots and lots
of Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim, different genres of trance, house
techno and downtempo together with what feels "right"

You know, scratching a intro line (it began in afrika-ka-ka for example)
or playing the oncoming tune in reverse with some fiddling on the eqs
if your deck can play in reverse.

Anything that suits, dont focus on that you have to either play them
separatly or try to beatmatch everything, just experiment at home and
see what you come up with, maybe you will think out a killer way of
making a transition between a hip-hop and pop track.

Dont be afraid to try new things, explore, test, experiment.

Good luck dude!

Yeah use ur creativty, but i have a friend back here that dj's at our HS parties and he is a really good at mixing trance but he doesn't even deal w/ fading and mixing to the rap and hip-hop. he jsut lets it play all the way through then starts the cue song and just quickly fades out to the other song. Everybody in town loves thinks it fine. Just never let the music completely stop! Just give it a thought. Hopefully this helps.

i'll tell you this right now,

if you havent mixed hip hop, dont expect to be able to mix hip hop when you want to. It takes practice and time because it's a different format. You normally mix by high hats/ snares similar to DnB/Breaks, but there's alot of noise in between those beats.

Anyways, what you can do is let's say you're mixing out from trance to hip hop. Try to pick a trance record that ends on a basic beat with no synths or anything and bring in a hip hop song that has synths with no beat (there are quite a few of those with intros like that). And then you can do a backspin on the trance record or something right before you bring in the hip hop. That's just 1 of the ways that u can do. There are a ton of others, but yeah like what others are saying u can be creative about it and people would not mind you switching genres like that.

If you're going to try mixing straight off hip hop and trance, hip hop records if it's pop usually is around 95 bpm, so in order to mix that in, u'd need to have at most a record around 120. So it's giong to tough if you plan on mixing straight off with no trick mixing involved.

btw HS ppl wont know if you're fading from 1 song to another because they're mostly well HS ppl, but when u DJ to college and up, they will notice if you DJ poorly because it will screw up the rhythm. The last few parties i've been to received an awful lot of boos and a lot of whispering "this party sucks, the DJ sucks." just to let u kno

I have to DJ all that stuff working in a club here at college.

Here are my tips on going to dance and hip hop

Easy way to do a fade from dance to hip hop, once the dance tune is coming to end, kill the power (if they are techs) and let it wind down and scratch in the first beat of hip hop so it sounds like
Chi-ca
Chi-ca
Chi-ca
Chi-ca
release. The key to beat matchin hip hop is listening for the snare. It will hit on beats 2 and 4 unlike the drum which can be all over the place. As for your pop shit, find some that have some kinda a dance feel even if it is @ 120 BPM. but if they do want pop shit, just play it like the radio.... when one song ends cut into the next one right away. And yea it HS'ers...... they cant tell the difference.

Ya, you guys are all correct: HS people dont care, as long as its the music they like to hear. Thanx everyone. Ill try the srcatching thing a little and see how that works. I dont have any gigs coming up soon, which is good, cuz it will give me time to try some techniques you guys suggested, and experiment with some more. What kinda traks to your recommend? (spacific artists/songs)

hiphop and all that commercial MTV pop music is not hard to mix together.... you can do alot of things to make your set smooth... scratch, back spin... but most people just fad from one to the other... good luck

yeah just improvise like everyone said..

the best way to do it is to actually stop the trance track and play the hip hop track from the begining immediately after

just prest the stop button, have the second record cued up and let it go.. i wouldnt suggest matching hip hop into trance even if it is possible. it would probably sound like crap hehe

thats my suggestion
