a needle question

well i started off using the ortofon nightclub S stylli.... but im thinking about switing to E's.

is a record that was broken in with spherical needles gonna sound bad when played by an elliptical needle?

also... how long do stylli last? ive had mine for about 2.5 months spinning about 3-4 hours a week on average. the reason i am posting this is becuase i am noticing that the needls are starting to skip when im cuing a track. i have the weight set on 3 grams. any suggestions? is this normal?

thanks for any advise

First of all there isnt much need for nightclubs for home use ...many people make the mistake buying the nightclups but they dont sound better then any other ortofon ...unless you go over 35,000 watts they are made for high powered systems.. but anyway no big deal they are great needles... changing to Es might be a wiser choice on your part because you can get the styli nightclubs with the technic headshell ...so it will fit perfectly and have less problems with your technics..thats if you have technic turntables.... if you do ...with the finger style carts ...the conntectors are little longer then they are sopposed to and different aloe...so sometimes your connectors get dirty faster and connectors get stuck in your tone arm which can cause problems later on in the future...were as with the Es witht he technic headshell u have the connectors that are made for that exact tonearm so youll have less problems...

where as spherical and elliptical doesnt really matter especially for home use ....records dont ware to much using seperate needles.... its mainly the storage of your records which can damamge the output and sound more then needle.

where as stylii and how long they last well it totally depends .. you said 3-4 hours each week ..well i think your stylii should last longer then 2.5 months...i have nightclubs and i have the same stylus for about a year and half ..nothing wrong with them.... if you start hearing a lot of static and your needles is clean and record is clean then its a sign of your stylus giving out .... ortofons are usually durable needles they dont break to fast.... if your needle is skipping try to weight it down a bit more its not gonna harm the vinyl or record...but if that doesnt work then it might be the needle or simply the vinyl...some vinyl have low grooves in them so it will skip more likely.

i hope this helps

thanks for the help... as far as home systems go, however i beg to differ becuase i have my dj system hooked up to a very sensitive hifi system... even changing the wires makes a significant difference in tone color and sound stage. thus im pretty sure that elliptical stylli will make a difference.

im not exactly sure what you mean when you talk about the headshell though... perhaps you thought i was using OM cartridges? im using concordes but... i havent had any problems until now. perhaps i will try adding weight. im pretty good about keeping records and needles clean. i guess i was just surprised when i noticed my needles skipping all of the sudden...when i havent changed anything consciously. what weight to you use btw?

thanks for the advise

what is the best method for storing records?
also, when i clean my records i use a damp paper towel to just get the dust off... is that bad?

for the skipping problem, maybe your record is warped?

yeah my records are slightly becuase they fell forwords in the case... i think milk crates work fine. anything as long as the temp is below perhaps 75 degrees F and not too dry...not too damp. most important thing is to store them in the sleeves vertically...dont stack them on the floor and dont lay them flat on a table.

i use gruvglide for cleaning...works pretty well for me
