Skipped to his thoughts on the NuBreed set, since that's the only one I have. Was a little surprised to hear him say it's Lawler's absolute best, and couldn't help but have a bit of a giggle at his enthusiasm as he played some snippets. Felt like he was trying to sell us on the brilliance of jazz-funk.

Does he slag on any of the mixes, or is it all praise, all the way through?

Besides a magazine compilation from Lawler, it's pretty much praises throughout the video and he calls him one of the greatest dj's of all-time. I've known of him via Nubreed series but this was truly informative on his compilations. He really capitalized on the electro house sound on his Lights Out trilogy.

I've seen Lawler live three times and never thought of him as someone with much home listening appeal, so I've never really been interested in checking out his mix CDs. There's a 2001 Essential Mix he did live from the Red Room at Passion that absolutely captures the energy and rawness of being in a club, though. Just the way it's recorded, the natural acoustics and the distortion, make it sound like you're there. The crowd sounds jolly enthusiastic as well.

Lawler was one of the first of the "GU" crew to move from progressive (the more tribal-oriented prog) to electro, starting with the ending of his 2003 EM and moving forward through the Lights Out comps and his 2005 EM. At that time, electro house was still a fairly fresh sound in my ears, so this is where I first got into his stuff. A lot of his tribal stuff just felt too dry and dull for my tastes. (I'm a New Yorker who doesn't like tribal very much... yeah I know :P)

I took a listen to a few of his other comps when I did a "Let's Listen" for the whole GU series, Lights Out 2 disk 1 still stands out the most in my eyes as the most banging, peak time... though I quite like Lights Out 3 as well.

Would love to see this type of analysis for some other big DJs *cough*Sasha*cough*
