I myself use the bending method (being a cheap and lazy bastard) and it works fine, for the most part. The 'method' is to slowly pull down on both sides, while holding your thumbs in the centre to counterbalance the force from the other fingers, then rotate the record and repeat. If the record is warped in one specific region, focus on that area rather than do the full go-around. Put on mild pressure for longer duration, rather than higher pressure for a shorter duration. About 30 degrees of bend should be o.k.
Don't overdo it, however - vinyl CAN and WILL snap if you exert too much pressure or bend it too far (45 degrees on both sides and it will snap for sure) - happened to me once, unfortunately, when I was careless and impatient (it was very fast - scared the shit out of me, too - *snap* and the pieces went flying out of my hands! In the middle of a set, to boot!). It was one of my favourites too.
