I've been thinking about this for a while, and I've come to the conclusion that for the most part trance is very mainstream.

Before I go on, to hopefully avoid flames I'm going to remind all of you that I'm not one of those "prog snobs".

With that said, everyone has to realize a few things. The first is that being commercial and or mainstream does not mean your selling out, nor does it mean that the music is bad, or even "cheese." What it does mean is that when many dj's have weekly gigs on big radio shows, and can charge so much for one night of spining, are treated as celeberties, there's no doubt that trance has entered the mainstream.

The fact is that when dj's have groupies, and there albums start selling a 100,000 albums trance has entered the mainstream, and the sooner we all accept it, and move on the sooner we can stop flaming each other over this stupid shit.

And your saying that is a bad thing? Who cares if trance is mainstream or not. Trance is trance. And as long as producers are producing quality tracks and dj's are mixing quality tracks, then we're all happy.

Hmmm... is it a good thing?

If trance is moving towards the mainstream doesn't it mean that the tunes will be even more formulaic, no-one will try doing anything original because then it wouldn't fit into the mainstream and not nearly as much $$$... just my two cents, doesn't have to be true

P.S. I am talking about if it will go all the way... Blasted by all the radio stations and so on.

Trance is now where near mainstream where I live so I don't care. When i'm stopped at a stop light and hear some kid pumping Dutch Force - Deadline, i'll worry but that won't happen for a while here. Just listen to the music, the rest is out of our hands.

Actually you can look at it this way... new artists will emerge and see this is an oppurtunity to develop a new sound that all the underground fans will love. Just cause trance becomes mainstream doesnt mean that there still wont be the different, quality underground stuff. When something is mainstream, the underground will always exist.

But alas, I dont think any form of electronic music will ever become "mainstream" mainstream, at least here in the US. I always hear house and breaks when I walk into a clothing store, electronica in an action film commercial, and cheese on pop radio stations at night. But I never hear people listening to trance on their CD players or TV shows devoted to trance. The purpose of electronic music to Americans is for background music or to make a film sell. So then, trance wont become mainstream in the US anytime soon. In europe on the other hand... I dont know because I dont live there

And Nadi, just because trance has a scene with some sort of structure and similarities as the scenes of other music genres, doesnt mean its commercial But I'm not saying your wrong or anything..

If Trance does become commerical in America, its gonna be scary . I hope it doesn't. It's pretty much commercial in Europe but more so in some countries than others. It's not also as commercial as other genres.

trance can get as commercial or popular as it wants. to be honest, i wouldn't care. what i would care about is the quality of the tracks that get churned out.

you could look at it this way, if the quality of trance nowadays carries over and becomes commercialized. great! then we wouldn't be having "commercial trax suck" arguments anymore. heh. i mean how great would it be to have the general public LOVING the quality of trance we here @ tranceaddict uphold?
