What is the future sound source for DJs?

OK, there's already quite a lively debate on the Vinyl vs CD thread, but the question I'm asking is slightly different:

Is vinyl going to be the DJs weapon of choice in 5 or 10 years?

Personally, if all the music I wanted to buy was available on CD and vinyl, I'd choose CD. The only reason I use vinyl is because a lot of music is available only on 12" and I don't have time to record it all to CD before each gig.

Minidisc could almost have become a possible option at one point. I did use some Denon MD twin decks, and they were quite good.

Perhaps DVD is going to become popular? More tracks than a CD, or even 5.1 tracks???

I voted Other, because i think that SACD is the future. SACD stands for "Super Audio CD". it's a new form of CD made by sony. It encodes at a much higher frequency rate, with more dynamic range than a regular CD. It also has the ability to have multi channel sound. So does DVD-A, but the one benefit of SACD over DVD-A is that SACDs will still play in a regular CD player!

This way, it will be compatible with other DJ CD decks out there, but if you have one that plays SACDs, then you can reap the benefits.

That being said, i don't think vinyl will ever die.

Personally, i have a fantasy of an entirely NEW medium. It would be analog, like a vinyl, but instead of shoddy, easily degradable vinyl, it would be stainless steel or titanium or something, etched with a laser.
then, in the center would also be a digital area, similar to a CD, which would contain the "elements" of the song, ie the kick drum, acapella, loops, cue times etc.
this area would be readable and writable by the player, where the outer area would just play the analog sound, using a laser to read the analog sound waves cut in.

anyway.. just my head in the clouds.

^^^ i agree that SACD may potentially be the future replacing vinyl, but so far, when it comes to DJing, nothing beats vinyl... its analogue, it won't skip in digital players like cd's but its heavy and degrades in sound quality...

nah the middle of the records will be filled with compressed saturated helium and your record bag will float behind you.... dont worry my friend our dreams are always one step ahead of you =]

i like the idea of sacd or whatever i think it would be kinda cool to be able to play a song and then while you mix theres a video feed comign from teh disk and the film clip to the song comes up on a big screen!!! but then you gotta have someone vjing the outcoming film clip and teh incoming film clip!!!

I think that the new medium should just be better vinyl. Not metal, but, something not as shoddy. There are a LOT of turntables out there, and I don't think the majority of people would even want to use CDs. Backwards compatability is good, like SACD, but, how about S-Vinyl? That would be sweet.

I voted other as well. The reason being is that I think more and more DJ’s will start to involve live elements into their sets. That means more EFX, Samples, Drum Machines, Synths etc live in the mix. So their format will be what ever they save their samples on to play on the system gear. Personally I think this is a good step foreword. Also I think if the legislation with MP3 catches up with the times and MP3 players get a kick up the arse, we’d see more of them, but I don’t think that’s likely to be honest. I’m all for embracing new technology if it allows the DJ to be more creative, and though other “cooler” formats may crop up, I don’t think the Vinyl DJ will ever completely disappear. The reason being is that there is too much sentiment between the two - DJ and Vinyl are synonymous. So even if the future DJ’s were playing a majority of CD’s/DVD’s/Whatever they’ll still have a few Vinyl tunes in their set.

I voted for other but i could be CD or SACD, the main thing is that i think he media will not matter because we will be using Final Sratch (or Final Scratch clones) that use vinyl as the tool but mp3, wav (maybe .ogg in the future) as the original source. So it does not matter that you got it an CD, or mp3, or whatever because you are playing with psudeo-vinyl.

I voted vinyl because that's what I prefer. Whatever the future holds, I don't really care. As long as I can still get vinyl that's what I'll use.
