Right, here it goes.

I've searched all the over the place for information on ripping vinyls, on this forum and on google.

And a while back I found a few more but most of them are reffering to ripping with a mixer and the other ones have lots of technical language that I don't understand so I figured I'd have to start a new topic for this one. Yes, I know there's been many threads asking about ripping vinyls but this one is different. This one is: "How does somebody as dumb as myself who doesn't have a clue about any technical shit rip vinyls without a mixer?".

The following is presuming that is possible to rip without a mixer.

OK, so here it goes. I have a turntable which has two inputs at the back which connect to my amplifier which then connect to the speaker. Again, I have no idea what the correct English term for these inputs is so I stuck them in my scanner:



Right, whatever these are called, what do I need to connect the turntable to my sound card?

aleop, they are phono jacks

to rip you need to find a way to connect you stereo + soundcard, its a lot easier having a mixer the end cable that goes in to the soundcard must be a stereo jack, like on the end of headphone cables, the smaller jack variety

the best way for you to rip is either to find a line out or phono/aux out of your stereo and get a phono to stereo jack cable to connect to the line in on your soundcard

there is also another way, you can connect the headphone socket to the line in on your soundcard by stereo jack to stereo jack, just make sure u get the large/small adapters

also u will need a recording program, i suggest audiograbber which is freeware and can be downloaded from www.download.com

depending what kind of turntable you have, you might need to worry about grounding. if it is a dj table, then most likely you are going to need to ground it before you can rip the vinyl. if it is a regular home stereo table, then you *might* be in luck and not have to ground the wires. either way, a turntable jack is pre-amplified or something like that, that is why your cd player sounds like shit when you plug it to the phono input on a home stereo.

so, basicallly, you are going to need some piece of equipment to sit in between your turntable, either a mixer, or a home-stereo reciever w/ a phono input on it

If you don't have a mixer, but do have a spare USB socket you could buy Steinberg Clean Plus which has the necessary phono preamp. And it has some de-noising facilities too

Basically, vinyl turntables output a very low volume signal compared to many other audio devices (CD, radio etc.) This means that, before you can record it you need to amplify the incoming signal. Because this extra amplification is done directly on the vinyl sound (and before the main amplifier) it is known as the phono-preamp stage. Don't consider recording vinyl without a phono-preamp between the turntable and your recording device!

Try asking Radio Shack.. or those places they deal with electronical stuff.. that you don't have a mixer but want to record your vinyl to CD for backup purposes....

This looks relatively promising and somewhat simple compared to what else I hear about ripping vinyls.

OK, I just bought the Steinberg Clean Plus software and hardware and I've managed to get sound through and everything is recording just fine but unfortunately the sound quality coming through is like the equivalent to an 8 KPS MP3 regardless of how I try to clean it with the software.

Where I think the problem lies is that I connected the line to the Microphone input on the back of my PC which is the only line input I can find on my PC. Should there be one on the sound card on the inside of the PC?

Sorry if this all sounds a bit dumb, I'm a complete newbie to this kinda stuff.

Please ignore the first post in this thread as that's all fulfilled.

If you had STR8-100's you could rip shit without any hassles they have a direct digital output on them.
