i'm having trouble setting up an FTP server because my router won't allow any outside connections to directly connect to my IP
i have a D-Link 704P gateway, running on XP, and using serv-u 4
anyone had similar problems before?

Port mapping/forwarding (whatever it's called in your router's settings) is the solution.

Create a static ip on your machine and place that ip int he DMZ. IT will put you beyond the firewall of your router. Then get a software firewall, though its not as good as the harware firewall.

for an ftp server, forward port 21/tcp from outside to your PC, and allow your PC to connect out on port 20/tcp.
or forward port 21/tcp and make all clients use PASV mode.

And what if my ftp server is on port 888 ? What other port should I forward in order to make it available for those who can't use PASV mode for some reason?
