Paul Van Dyk @ Traffic Adelaide REVIEW

Well, I just got home from the night, so yer, I didn't die, just had to wait frigging ages for a bus, and then a lift from shopping centre.
So I'm heaps tired, but anyways....

Was going to stay at mates place, but yes.....

The night started off well, as all meeting at Dowlz's place, just having a general chat, well mostly about trance :P, playing xbox and yer, just meeting each other.

So at about 11:30 we (Dowlz, mr_stamper, GelatinPuff, a few friends (can't remember all thier names sorry hahah, and myself) headed off to the club.

This was the lowpoint of the night, with my friend, not been allowed in, because his ID was expired, and had a corner cutt off, and his student ID had different spelling (he's originally from Russia so it translates differently) Yer, they were in the right, but I mean, it's not like someone is going to pay $40 (if they WERE underage) on the chance that they might get in.
So that sucked, as he had to go home.

Anyway, we go in, and its a pretty small club, and when the full 450 (I'm told) were in there, it was a bit packed haha.

So Mr Emotionless starts his set, and it fucks up.
Something wrong with stylus, or weight on tonearm, I'm not sure, but it starts skipping, and sounds shit. So Mr Van Dyk, is forced to stop and start again.

Anyway, this time its pretty much right, and we get underway.

Haha, to be honest, I'm crap at IDing tracks, and I don't think any of us knew a majority of them, but these were played (sorry if im wrong);

Nu_NRG - Butterfly
Hydra - Affinty
Solid Sleep - Club Attack (his remix i guess....)
Reeloop - Fucking Society (dub)
Paul Van Dyk - Autumn
AvB - Yet Another Day (sorry, forgot remix)
AvB - Sunburn (played under 2 other tracks I think)
Paul Van Dyk - Nothing But You!!!!!!!!
Carrera 2????
and a few others that I'm sure the other guys wil list;

He of course finished off with For An Angel, but ALSO, Nothing But You was played after that, for the second time.

Man its such a wicked track! Would have to be highlight of the night.

Anyway, we were pretty much near the front the whole time (one row of hot chicks in front, but thats ok, they are allowed to be, cos they are hot), in true TA fashion, even though we got pushed to the side a lot :/

The first hour and last half hours were the best of the 3 hour set, but all in all, it was a very good night, I think he even smiled once (but I could be mistaken).

Theres probably a lot wrong / missed out in this post, but im hell tired :/

BTW: Cool to meet both you guys (mr_stamper, GelatinPuff) next meet up = Darude? hahaha

In terms of pvds set last night, im still undecided

But it was cool meeting with all you guys though (cam, jules and matt)

tracks that stood out
Armin van Buuren feat. ray wilson : another day (sunday 5pmmix)
Three Drives - carrera 2 (nunrg remix)
Paul van Dyk vs City - suzann
solarstone - solarcoaster (midway remix) <- think that was the follow up dj though?
and of course:
Paul van Dyk - for an angel

in terms of tracklisting though, for a three hour set it could have been better i wanted to see some of his remakes

dowlz ended up getting his for an angel sleeve signed lucky

in terms of chicks, damn that tall blonde was hot i was lucky enough to be dancing right behind her for the first two hours before that friend of yours matt came and pushed her way to the front for me

anyway, my legs are sooooo stuffed, and when is this ringing in my ears gonna go away?
he was so dodgy on those eq's!
DAMN THAT PHAT BASS

Whoops didnt see this thread and posted in the other one. Oh well, i'll do a cut and paste job:

Got to Dowlz's house about 11.00, met up with Gumble and Gelatinpuff (both great guys) and a couple of their friends. Got to traffic about 12.00 ish and what can i say, the place was freakin tiny!! It was hard to comprehend that PvD was going to be playing there. Even worse the sound setup wasn't all that great. Not too good for the steep price of $42 a ticket (well thats steep in Adelaide anyway).

Paul came on about 1.30 to recieve a whole heap of cheering from everyone. The good thing about the place being small was the atmosphere. It was packed, and i mean packed, even tho there was only 400 people there. Trying to get to the toilets took about 15 minutes it was that bad.

Paul was wearing a "stop the war" t-shirt which was cool. Anyway the first time he tried mixing he abslutely train-wrecked.... really really bad. It was awful! So he quickly crossfaded into the other track. Then when he tried miing out of that he trainwrecked again! This timne he just turned the record off, and started from scratch with the other record. I think it must have been something to do with the stylus or something?? I dont know but after a bit of adjusting oon the TT's there were no more train wrecks thank goodness. Anyway, spose you all want a bit of a tracklisting?? Well i didnt go to well.

Heres the songs i recognised:
Nu-NRG - Butterfly <---- He started his set with this
Hydra - Affinity
Armin van Buuren - Sunburn <---- (for about 1 minute)
Roc Project feat. Tina Arena - Never (filterheadz remix) <--- not 100% on this one
Dark Monks - Insane (steve murano remix) <----- (for about 1 minute)
Solid Sleep - Club Attack (pvd mix)
PVD vs. Marco V. - For a Revolt (bootleg)
Reeloop - Fucking Society (pvd mix)
Nu-NRG - Le Mirage
Paul van Dyk - Nothing But You <---- Nice!
Armin van Buuren - Yet Another Day (sunday 5pm mix) <--- wtf???!
Three Drives - Carrera 2 (nu nrg remix)
Paul van Dyk - Arctic
Circ - Destroy She Said (de donatis remix)
Paul van Dyk - For an Angel <--- What a tune!

Anyway thats all i recognised. not too good, but to be honest a lot of the songs i didnt know were pieces of shit. There were one or two i didnt know that were good but apart from that there was a lot of crap in there. Also with his mixing he did a lot of instant mixing, which was a bit shit, but there were some times where he would use the CD-J's as well and mix in three songs together.

ALso, PvD gets the award for the ugliest record collection ever!! There were either black or white (damn pvd unreleased shit)! The only colour i saw were on the vandit record he had.

And it was a bit of a disappointement that at the end of the night he just left. He didnt sign anything or shake anyones hand or anything. It was really rude i thought. Also he showed pretty much no interest in the crowd at all. Maybe one smile out of him the whole time. He might be having relationship difficulties or something??

THE VERDICT:
Great to see the man himself and hear a few nice tunes but in no way compared to Ferry, Armin or Tiesto. He played a lot of shit and didnt interact with crowd one little bit.

6/10

I agree with you there jules. First hour was good, second hour was very average and third hour was absolutely top notch. Overall 6.5/10, no where near as good as Armin or Ferry.

As far as tracklisting goes, add to that list:
Paul Van Dyk vs City - Suzann
Paul van Dyk - Nothing But You (played this twice)
Scott Bond vs Solarcoaster - 3rd earth

As far as I'm aware, PvD's lack of crowd interaction is standard (although apparently he was a little more animated in Sydney last year?). Anyway, sounds like there's some killer tracks in there .

*runs off to crank out Butterfly*

is it just me or is he not making a great effort at keeping it fresh? it's better when dj's play remixes of *other* people's tracks (especially anthems) as a surprise element of their sets. it's more exciting and really pumps up the crowd. like pvd playing "for an angel" as a closer is nothing new (somebody mentioned he's played it the past 3 times he's been here?), but when Armin dropped it in the middle of his set at Two Tribes Sydney everybody just went off.

i mean it wouldn't be a pvd set without his classic tune but he really should have a tracklist to match the energy it generates and then end it with classic tunage to send the crowd crazy (and have something to remember). 3 or 4 awesome tracks mixed with garbage isn't gonna cut it as a top set.

sounds like a good night for most, but definitely not what pvd is capable of. shame about the lack of crowd acknowledgement and interaction. hope he snaps out of it by sunday night...
