My main project and what I hope to end up making money on (but really has cost me way more money so far) is related to radio simulation. Accurately simulating radio devices used by military forces, accessories (like fill devices, GPS units, etc), and their interactions with the environment (real time radio signal loss modeling in a 3D environment).

I was going to school then I stopped to work on this over a year ago, but my business partner kinda went off the deep end (his mom died and he hasn't really been the same since) and things are going slower than I had hoped. I am considering going back to school, probably this fall.

I also have a couple other business ventures that I am considering, but those would require significant capital investment to get started and I can't be arsed to do that right now (and the economy isn't in a place where I think it'd pan out well at the moment).

But yea, living at home sucks, on barely any money, so I gotta figure out what I need to do here pretty soon.

I see. So unfortunately you confirmed what I suspected: You're doing work on a professional level without getting paid for it. I asked because with that radio simulation stuff you started to sound like some of my friends who are communication engineers.
I don't know if it's the lack of some degree / formal education that's holding you back and I won't dish out smart-ass advice here but you should turn this hobby into a job.
And business ventures doesn't sound like the right idea considering you say you live on barely any money.

He was shot in a doorway, regarded by close-quarter-battle operators as a fatal funnel.

It is a job, but just not one that pays. Nothing is holding me back, in fact I turned down a senior position at the company that produces the platform for which I write this software for because I'd have to give up working on it (because it competes with one of their official partners).

We have a company, and we have a distribution contract for the software, its just not done yet, or in a state that I'd consider good enough for professional use (its been released as a consumer grade product though for Arma2 for almost 2 years now though, just youtube "Arma ACRE" and there are hundreds of videos explaining how to use it or showing it being used in game).

For the military version (for VBS2) we have a lot of stuff that is more complicated than the consumer version, including our own VOIP software since we use Teamspeak3 for the consumer version (which sucks, and I'd like to switch to our own software, but most gaming communities wouldn't take that up).

We were pursuing a round of capital investment during the winter but my business partner who knew most of the people involved in getting us some money to hire a couple more people sorta went AWOL and I haven't taken the time to continue to look into that (spent it developing instead).

It sucks balls not getting paid, but whatever, we don't have too much overhead. The most expensive part is paid for by our distributor, and thats our commercial/developer license for the military version of Arma (VBS2).

Nou, wouldn't it be better if you accepted the job and kept coding for a hobby? It's awesome when we can do what we like, but there comes a time we need to do one thing or two we don't like so we can do something awesome later on.

I mean, I hate deadlines, but I need to deal with them in order to keep doing the stuff I love. I've had to take jobs I didn't want because it would slow down my research, but I had to bite the bullet and take them.

Well at that point I had already put a year into the project and I'd be legally obligated NOT to work on it more because it'd be a competing product, so I wasn't too thrilled at the idea of having to throw away all that work. Also from past work experience I know how much it sucks to try and do hobbyist development on the side, especially when its the same thing you are doing at work.

Also the job was in Orlando. Fuck that.

I know 3 other people they contacted for the job and they all turned them down, mainly based on that it was in Florida. Even in this economy no one wants to move there for work!

Actually though I heard they filled the position from within, a guy I know from a Arma community, and another friend of mine took a designer position there (he hates florida too, but really needs the work).

The entire development community for this simulator is very small, everyone knows everyone.
