Actually, after thinking it over and doing a bit of searching myself, it seems more likely to me. I would put the fraud probability at maybe 75%. Maybe he graduated from a less well-known music school, or didn't graduate at all, and spent a decent amount of time with some music theory and music history books, and likes to claim better academic and professional cred than he has. But who really knows.
