Actually, in spite of days like yesterday, I still think we're living through good times (and 2016 was more of a dent than an all out catastrophe).
A hundred years ago your forefathers were fighting in WWI (Brazil didn't really do much back then). Four score minus two years ago our ancestors were heading to the trenches once again in WWII. When I was born, the thought of a nuclear apocalypse coming to reality was quite realistic. Then millennials were born during a lull in human history, in which I, for one, experienced the re-democratisation of my country, and a more stable world order after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Syria was probably the greatest single cock-up ever since, but the end of all (officials) wars in the American continent also happened this year, so it's not all doom and gloom:

The map above considers the Mexican war on drugs as an actual war, so it's not very consistent (China is also orange because of the Xinjiang uprising, by that's killed fewer people than there were months this year).
Compared to all this we've experienced ourselves, 2016 was a disaster. But, if you think about what previous generations had to go through, it could've been way worse. Although, of course, the Don can easily make it so, but the US government was founded upon checks and balances, so let's hope they actually work

One shocking thing for me was who the media is handling it; I was sadly watching Sky news and they did a full translation of his words, specifically about the atrocities in Aleppo and what did the news anchor say as soon as it came back to him?
"we have idea what caused this man to carry out this attack or what's behind his actions" |
Oh, Sky News! Sincerely, the only thing good about that televised tabloid are the adverts. Other than that, I've always took everything they said with a massive pinch of salt

You're certainly right that even in the last 100 years, there have been far more mass brutal events; our generation can't even fathom what ww1&2 were like, but what's new, and why I say tragic is that at least in developed parts of the world that weren't engaged in these once or twice in a lifetime global wars, you had a semblance if everyday security.
Sure, there's always been fringe threats but we've never experienced what we have now; you can be anywhere, from a beach front promenade, to a Christmas market to a football match (basically any public event in nearly any country) and get mown down or vaporized by by an indiscriminate nutter who is willing to die for their cause.

Compared to the world wars, we live in cushy times.

I know he is using slow-mo, you think I'm stupid? I have never thought twice about going anywhere at anytime wheneve I wanted. He can't, because San Francisco is Nazi capital of the world...I AM DEAD SERIOUS. SAN FANCISCANS ARE THE WORST RACISTS. It was heartbreaking to hear how he had "his heart broken" so many times, "White men would both reject him" and simultaneously "infatuate" interest... Just to prop him up and crush him,BECAUSE HE SITS NEXT TO THEM AND IS ABLE TO SEND HIS KIDS TO THE SAME SCHOOL, THE ONE OR TWO IN THE WHOLE OF NORTHERN CALIFORNIA THAT ISN'T A MESS. JERKS. They are just envious. People are getting called shit on the street because of their skin color, but Asians have always been discriminated within the gay community. I hate it, now it's a different flavor of racism and I can't sit idle. This is why drug addiction is so prevalent amongst the under-represented; ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! I WANT MY COUNTRY BACK, I WANT THOSE POOR...I WANT THE UGLIEST, THE SHORTEST, AND THE FORGOTTEN.
So, apparently, one of my best friends who is from "MICROnesia" isn't really looking good at all; his skin! textbook addict, a recluse and a stranger. How bad is it? I AM DONE WITH THIS, we have a problem SF, and I blame ... white people. Those entitled assholes who have built this plantation country. Addiction hits the most prone to have their lives destroyed because of drugs. Three excellent friends, but those guys are probably just 'too rich' to care. I care, why are you living like shit? Why did you stand me up, prop me up, and cancel on me because you binged the days before. My cherished friends who did everything for me and saved my life when I was spiraling down, have gone rogue; no bars, no parties, no Meetup's...I know they are on that 'slow-mo'.
Education degrees and thousands of dollars down the drain because...privilege.While my friend can be bullied or hurt verbally because he is a minority, another gets away with propping up the predatory scenario that suckers in the 'ambitious', 'the good students', the 'genii'...

When you read "whites only" on Grindr, or when you go on double dates with Asian, black friends, X person of Y origin...whatever that means...and they are so rude to say "I am not into asians, I am not into blacks", but "I'm not racist because it's just a preference" FUCK YOU
