So in response to proposed government legislation requiring large companies like Google and Facebook to pay Australian news media outlets for use of their content on their platforms, Facebook has today completely banned the sharing of any and all Australian news content.

As the Leftists would say in my country, "Facebook is a private business and can do whatever it wants." Monopolies are trendy again apparently. Good luck to you guys, don't expect Beijing Biden to reign in Big Tech either. But I hope your government doesn't back down.

Yeh WTF. How am I meant to get the age's coronavirus lockdown updates now? Going to a separate app is so inconvenient.

the part that pisses me off is that they've removed access to foreign news content which of course makes zero sense as far as the debate goes and is just a middle finger to the government. fair play and all but looks so petty. i did notice how clean my feed is now though with mostly friends' posts rather than news.

Facebook is not a monopoly? And 'Beijing Biden'? What nonsense have you been reading now?
I think he meant the seeming oligopoly of giant social media companies, like Facebook and Twitter. Isn't there a debate in the US on whether social media sites like FB and Twitter should be regarded as platforms or publishers, with one being the latter having quite drastic effects on how they can police the content published on them? I need to read more about that, it seems interesting.

Well, they're not an oligopoly either.
The problem with platforms vs publishers is that FB and Twitter act as both, depending on their mood. As platforms, they have immunity from how their services are used. As publishers, they can take down any material they deem to be objectionable.
Considering that US courts have declared that social media is 'the modern public square', this means that these corporations have power over what is supposed to be a public forum, but they also can't be held liable for how they use that power.
lews and i both knew what populist dickhead mcgee was on about.
once traditional business media lost domination of information dissemination the idiot Right eventually took issue with the property rights of business to control the content on that business' platform (the ideologues were a little slow on the uptake). epic sooking commenced. all of a sudden it wasn't fair that big business got to pick and choose the content shared on their platform.

To be fair, for Facebook and Twitter being private companies, they sure are being pressured quite a bit by Congress to take action against "misinformation".
