Been there twice. In 1996 drove through most of the upper/central/and lower part of it (turned south in Great Falls, came back up through Bitterroot Valley) avoiding a family reunion. Loved it.
In 2003 I went through it on a road trip, came in via Lolo Pass and stayed in Missoula before heading east and then south into Wyoming the next day.
The part west of the Rockies reminds me of some places in Western Washington, but you don't ever get that hemmed in feeling here as you do in the Bitterroots (as Citric's video and photos can attest). The east side really lives up to the states motto though.
