Actually, your assumption isn't too far off, and I double checked before I wrote this post.
The Andes are exactly where Brazil ends and the Spanish speaking countries start for the most part (except for the 'guays, which are a whole different story). Apparently, that's because we went as far inland as the mountains would let us, and stopped short of climbing them because... our neighbours beat us to it or it would've been too greedy or something. We bought a huge chunk off Bolivia precisely because we settled there in larger numbers, so we saved them the trouble of dealing with insurgents every other year - and, you guessed it, it's just rainforest, no snowy goodness (or earthquakes for that matter, so yay!).
But, yeah, I was born in Brasilia, got pasta'd up in Northern Italy for a couple of years, and after a year long stint in Rio, I came back and I've stayed put ever since, with the occasional trip to Manaus
