Yeah, we knew around September that Flu and RSV was gonna be hitting earlier and harder this year than in many years. Thankful our entire family got all seasonal vaccines updated before the shit storm hit.

We have had a big surge in pediatric patients such that we've had to keep beds open on MY unit (a surgical unit) for overflow while also taking patients from outside our catchment area. Also having to float staff to their unit to help cover staffing issues. Compounded by the fact that Canada has had a shortage of children's Tylenol and Advil, and recently amoxicillin too. Fucking nightmare scenario.

my nieces got me sick before i got my flu shot/covid booster. when i was in the hospital the nurses were talking about how the children's hospital is full and they're having to turn people away. the hospital i was in was full, i was in the hallway the whole time awaiting a room lol. if the specialist didn't like clear 5 minutes for me and get me an ultra sound on the spot i would have had to wait another day.

not sure why people can't keep their kids home when they're sick or put on a damn mask. argh

Because we don't live in a society that supports families to stay home when sick.

The wife is sick, but tested negative for strep, COVID, and flu A and B. I'm thinking it's likely viral pneumonia or RSV based on the way it's acting in her lungs. Unfortunately, chemo and radiation nuked her lungs, so it's always a long road to recovery for her. She wears her PPE, but when you're seeing 140+ people a day, and they're coughing in your face, it's damn near impossible to avoid this stuff. She vaccinated me for flu a few weeks ago, and thus far I've been fortunate, but given how rough this season is already, I'll be shocked if I avoid it entirely. You ladies on the front lines are underappreciated, Jenny. So thank you for what you do!

When I went to get my 4th Covid shot a month or two ago, they also offered me the flu vaccine, which of course I accepted. Can't believe these things are not made more available for everyone.

They are here. What I can't believe is how low the percentage of the population is that actually akes advantage of them. It's about on par with the percentage of people who vote, sadly.

I always hear 'I got my flu shot and I still got the flu!'. Then they don't want to get another one. The expectations of vaccines is a bit unrealistic. We all had flu shots and were still able to motor through it and tamiflu knocked it out in a day or two.

Too bad the kids revolted against the tamiflu. Theirs really sucks!

Yeah. After all this time and flu shot campaigns year after year, still so much misunderstanding by the general public. Fact sheets easily accessible via print, digital media etc. But I guess the other issue that it comes from our government...

How has no one mentioned throwing parties for kids before? Must have missed a good story or two if so. We're living in a pretty massive house for the winter. It has high ceilings so we bought a really tall tree. It's beautiful and almost brought me to tears after we decorated it. We decided to host a Christmas party at our place today - kids and parents from our boy's playgroup. Not my idea, of course, and it was as much practice for me as him. I remember when I was young my dad told me to attend the parties and not host them. This has always been my philosophy. It went well though. My wife was the social butterfly and helped facilitate things. I was there to play music and find a conversation that wasn't lame or awkward. Considering we had about 15 kids and 20 or so parents, things went really well. It was obvious some people didn't vibe with others, but everyone got on well enough because the kids did great. No injuries, tantrums, etc. Side note: There was a divorced Russian mother here. I started playing the decks toward the end as a teaser and she asked me if we were doing a NYE party. She's the only one other than us who was drinking -- a right laugh. She said she hadn't met anyone who likes music and let's their kids sleep through while partying. Seems there's a niche of Russian women like this; we've met a few lately. We have some friends flying in from Berlin for NYE. They're gonna love her lol.

We didn't throw/host a bday party until just this past summer - I think extravagant bday parties for kids under 5 are fucking stupid.

Our daughter's bday is in the summer, and lucky for her/us we have a pool, so it's easy to have a fun party with minimal fanfare.

We only invited her age plus one extra amount of kids. All but one RSVPed so it ended up being about 20-25 people total including younger siblings + parents. I did go crazy decorating with just balloons but it looked fun as fuck. I ordered a really cool custom cake and put out some charceuterie + cruditeee, chips, fruit, etc., and we ordered pizzas. Alcohol for the adults (I think this is why all but one RSVP'ed lol).

It was one of the hottest days of the summer to boot - couldnt' have asked for better conditions for a first real birthday party with school friends.

I'd never hosted a birthday party before and I do not like hanging out with other parents typically, unless I REALLY know them. Everyone was cool as fuck - major 6 degrees of separation among the group which made socializing genuinely engaging. The kids were all so well behaved and shared similar manners to our daughter, which really validated our preschool choice lol.

Looking forward to the next school aged rager!!

This is so damn important isn't it. I hate having anyone other than family and friends inside my house, and even then I'm hesitant. You better come correct.

It was cool that everyone brought our boy a gift. No bullshit toys either. Real dope stuff. What we paid for snacks and drinks we got back in not buying presents.

Greeks are cool like that. They just need to sip less coffee and pound the pints a bit more. I love the Brits for that. To each their own though.
