I've always looked at studying law as somewhat analogous to computer hacking. It is about finding the weak points and exploiting them, or finding the weak points and improving them, all while staying within the bounds of what people will accept.
So its not surprising that you get a lot of people with potentially malevolent goals studying law.

Yeah, that was the first thing to come to mind when my aforementioned friend said he was going to law school.
