As a matter of fact, you're totally right.
[Nerdspeak] Both Spanish and Greek went through similar processes that turned d's, for example, into th's (as in "this"), though it was a lot more thorough in Greek. Both languages have a similar 5-vowel sound system, whereas French has a lot more vowels (not to mention the nasal ones). The absence of a thrilled-r in most French speakers probably sets the language even more apart from its neighbouring sister languages. [/Nerdspeak]
My inner layman also reckons the way they sing when they speak (their intonation, so to speak), is very Mediterranean, and has a Italian/Spanish ring to it. I'd be hard-pressed to explain what it is about it that is similar but, given the proximity/common origin, this isn't really surprising.
