To be fair, this happens here every single year during the rain season (as Tubularbilliams can confirm, it's not a coincidence that it rains more here and in Australia during "the summer"). It always happens in two of the states closest to the Tropic of Capricorn (Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo) where the urban sprawl is a bit chaotic and, due to poverty, people that face more economical hardships end up being pushed to risky regions, such as areas that naturally flood during the rainy season... and there's little our government can do because, let's face it, we've got more troubling challenges to face.

It's sad to say, but we're used to it.

Australia gets lots of floods too, but the difference is that they have to be seriously huge ones before a lot of property damage happens, in some of these places they where getting 20-40mm of rain every half hour! Which is just crazy... then for the next 10 years its going to be a drought again.

If there's something to come of all this, I don't want to buy property in Qld any more Stu

Yeah, the dog probably died. Here's the part where they mention the dog in the article:
quote:
The scene shows when lady Pelinha's (that's a nickname google translated literally) tried to help her dog, Beethoven.

"He bit my arm to try to escape but could not hold it. If I tried to help him, I would die. Poor thing, he looked at me with those sad little eyes and went in the water. Had nothing to do, "she said, showing the bite mark on her left arm.

Lol

Northern NSW is getting fucked at the moment too, as well as Victoria in quite a few places. It's not just us!

Buy here, sure, just stay out of the flood zones Plenty of info on where Brisbane floods (especially after this).

I actually learned some interesting bits and pieces about Brisbane's history from all this. Our last huge flood was in 1974, when we had a similar climate pattern with a very wet spring and early summer followed by a massive deluge in the dam catchment areas, and it basically fucked most of Brisbane. That's why they built one of our newer dams (Wivenhoe). It was to be a kind of "shock absorber" against this happening the same way.

We go so much rain this time though, both the dams were already completely full when the "deluge" hit earlier in the week. We would have been totally fucked without the Wivenhoe dam

Bummer. Which suburbs were you looking at, out of curiosity?

Teneriffe and New Farm
Thinking Perth might be a better option!

Ha, yeah ok.

New Farm park yesterday morning at about 9am, taken from the opposite side of the river (Norman Park)

Not too many weddings down there that day, I'm guessing Though I bet some muppets tried anyway.

If you like fancy-pants suburbs, try the higher parts of Hawthorne, Bulimba, and Balmoral. Or Hamilton and Ascot, if you can afford it

Balmoral looks nice, their median price range is roughly 500k-1m less than equivalents in Sydney. Mmm, in fact some of them are dirt cheap for what they are.
