I'm not the sort of person who would do that. It sounds a bit too arrogant and smug to say something like that to an earnest believer, and I don't even care what they believe in, though I think it's sad it made everyone else miss them. Besides, I didn't even know whether they were acting the same way I do, so I couldn't reprehend them for that.
But, yeah, come to think of it, it was a bit extreme. I suspect that, to make things worse, her boyfriend doesn't really understand what's going on because of all the chanting in a foreign language, and this scares the hell out of him |
maybe you could have softened the blow by using interpretive dance to explain it to them.
In truth if your happiness is reliant on others acting as you wish you'll be sorely disappointed.

Regardless of either side's opinion on the matter, both parties are acting like selfish babies. "But MY feelings are hurt! Wah wah!" "But MY religion! Wah wah!"
Is the day not supposed to be about the deceased person?? Both parties need to get the fuck over themselves. It's ONE fucking day of the year - they can't set aside ANY of their own bullshit to honour someone else's life/death/whatever?
Fucking brutal.

Actually, that's a good point, but there's the cultural bit involved.
I mean, it's not like anyone yanked them out of the bedroom and told them to man up (which would've been just as disproportionate). As for the deceased person, surprisingly that isn't the point: If I understood correctly, and I may have misunderstood something, it's about bringing the family together - and the granduncle is just seen as the reason there's a family at all. That would explain my wife's reaction... she misses her cousin because she now spends most of her time in church, leaving the rest of the family behind.
Personally, I'm inclined to think the way you do: if they wanted to lock themselves up, it's their choice and I don't care. Probably it's part of growing up (this cousin is in her early 20's) and finding one's identity. But then, IGK has a point, and interpretative dancing would've been an awesome way of telling her all this
