Airplanes are very fast, they don't use combustion, but rather fuel cells which use an ion exchange system. If you wanted to go from New York to Paris, it would take about 2 1/2 hours. These are public flights, mind you. The military uses much different forms of transportation, which I hesitate to discuss.
Also, NASA loses much of it's funding for Mars exploration after 2016.
