Yeah but in this case he took Amoxicillin, which is only good for bronchitis and pneumonia. Jenny's right, it wouldn't have done jack shit for a cold, even had he taken the whole thing.

The new trend in abx treatment is to prescribe higher doses over a shorter period of time, typically 3 days. Not that it's super new news, but research has proven that taking abx for 5-7-10 days is counterproductive because of the other effects they have on the body. Higher doses over a shorter period of time are now proven just as effective.

Maybe the doctor was just looking for a placebo? I once read doctors in Brazil usually prescribe unnecessary medicine for patients because people are usually distrustful of doctors who tell them they'll get better after a while even if they don't take any medicine.
I know absolutely nothing about this topic, but given how random and useless his prescription seems to have been, I can't think of a more logical alternative.
