So I'm kinda pissed right now - went to my favorite restaurant tonight with some friends (2 of them go with me often). We left a less than stellar tip one time (it was the same waitress we had tonight) because she totally fucked up our order, but even then we left 15% i'm sure).

I'm pissed because I like the place but this has left a really bad taste in my mouth.

I'd have a word with the manager and see what could be done. Who said you don't tip well? Why did (s)he say it? And, above all, is it even mandatory in the establishment?

I stopped going to my favourite restaurant for a while because of a similar incident. Here in Brazil we're supposed to tip 10%, and it's even on the bill. I usually pay with my debit card, and this one night I happened to have some money on me. I just went there for some drinks, which totalled R$ 5.00 - R$ 5.50 with the aforementioned 10%. I handed the guy R$ 7.00 and kept waiting for the change (R$ 1.50). It wasn't much, I give you that, but I don't see why you should pay extra to someone who's already doing their job... specially 40%. That's ludicrous.

So, realising the guy wouldn't come back to our table, I called the waiter back and, assuming it was just a mistake, I said he forgot to give me my change. The waiter was visibly angry, and brought me the money without saying a single word and/or looking at my face (yes, he kept the 10%, as expected). Confused, I was rather disappointed that this happened in a place I used to go nearly on a weekly basis. It wasn't a surprise, as all my friends hate the service in that place, but I stop trying to convince them their mozzarella sticks mattered more than the lousy service (the staff is appallingly greedy, going so far as to round up the tip if the total is an odd number and there's an even number of people on the table... and the end result is just one extra cent!).

Tipping is a pretty important part of the restaurant industry here in the US. The guy who brought us our check said it to us. He's a waiter there, but we rarely have him as we normally go around 11:30 (open til 1am) and he's usually drinking at the sushi bar by that time. We usually have one of two guys, and I'd imagine that neither of them think that about us because when we walked in the one guy who normally waits on us got us a table (jumped us ahead of a few parties) immediately and said what's up to me.

My two friends are adamant about never going back... It's just the perfect place for me though, as I don't have a car and it's walking distance from my apartment (on the way home from campus). Coupled with the fact that it's open late and serves alcohol and good food, I'd hate to give it up. But really wtf

I find the whole tipping system in the US pretty retarded. No one would ever post about tipping in Germany, let alone make a thread about it (well, if Sven Väth sat next to me in a restaurant I would make a thread about how much he tipped). Why not? Because it's simple, you just round to whatever you like and no one complains because the tip is not supposed to fill up some shitty salary.
Why do Americans have to make it such a pain in the ass?
