Why does Whatsapp exist, exactly? It just mirrored my contacts and lets me send them short messages - isn't it what SMS is for?

While I get free unlimited SMS within Australia, if I want to text any of my friends overseas, it costs me 50c per message, so Whatsapp is way better because there are no charges. Other than that, I guess it's not really that different to SMS.

That's what people told me at first, and I thought it would be an SMS-thingy for people overseas... but then it automatically added every-bloody-one on my contacts list and I'm afraid of being dragged into a world of spam and mass chain messages by the hippie side of my family. As much as I love them, I'm tired of reminding them prawns and vitamin C are not a lethal mix, and the magnetic north won't blow the planet up during the next magnetic shift.
Do I have to block every single person on Whatsapp until I'm left with a group I'm comfortable with?

That's weird, as far as I know the only people on my Whatsapp are the ones I've added myself. It never added all my contacts automatically. That would piss me off too, lol.

My sister contacted me within minutes, and I even had a list of "favourites". I tried to find out where I could manage my contacts and it seems I could either block the ones I already had or add new ones. And that's about it.
Apparently I don't even need to have these people in my contacts - I someone's got my phone number, that's enough to grant them a place among my Whatsapp contacts. I'm no privacy freak, and I surely don't give people my number at random, but it's still quite unsettling, really.

WhatsApp is immensely popular here in the Netherlands. It's way more popular than SMS because it's free, that is if you are on a data bundle (which almost everyone is).
Everyone who's already in your phone's contacts and who has WhatsApp installed will automatically appear in your WhatsApp contacts. Thus, you can instantly see who has WhatsApp installed and who hasn't. If you ever remove a person from your contacts, the WhatsApp history with that person will remain visible. But like you said, you can always block someone.
You can very easily send photos and videos which you can't using SMS. Also, I'm in several groups. My family, my football team, various groups of friends. Last week we were planning a weekend with a group of friends. We made a new group chat specifically for that weekend and everything related to the weekend got posted there.. so you don't have to spam other group chats where most of those friends are in.. but also other people who wouldn't want to receive all those messages.
And if you're fed up with a group, you can always leave it or just silence it for a certain period.
