You know, it's interesting to hear this; When I first got here I realized that people believe everything you say, simply because of the accent and that we sound so serious.
But in terms of trustworthiness, the majority of people I knew in the UK growing up and even now (save one or two) were/are in hindsight the flakeyest and most unreliable. i'm also not talking about isolated groups - I mean across business relationships, close friends, passing acquaintances, teachers, etc.
Now I live in LA, the place where the stereotype is superfical/fake people, I have a large group of friends and business aquantences that I can relay on without question. Sure there's the odd shark or weirdo, but honestly, I experience a completely different level of personal integrity.
maybe it's a case of the sane ones sticking together, or that the ideology of no class system (even though there really is one here albeit related to money or job etc) means people rely on their own moral compass more.
One american friend just said to me the other day after working for a Brit company out here, that she felt fooled by the accent, that most Brits she dealt with have little to no fiber when it comes to integrity or not being a flake.
Suer these are sweeping generalizations, but honestly, even a lot of the Brits I meet out here (again, save a couple of close friends) are just blaggers and bullshitters. Again, maybe that has to do with the reasons they are in the the US or specifically LA. Fuck knows, but the phenomenon is there. |
My father does a lot of business with the British and he's of the same impression. Uptight people who think rules don't apply to them.

quote: | I have recently been alerted to a new acronym used by expats here in Vietnam: LBH. It means Loser Back Home. This term is meant to describe a certain type of man that flocks to places like Asia. These are the men who just couldn’t hack it back home and thus have brought their big guts, loud-mouthed bravado and itty-bitty balls to be adored by women who only see $$$. These bulbous bastards had tried and failed at being successful at chasing poontang, working in prestigious jobs, or simply having a social group that was not friends with them simply because they feel bad for them. At home, these geeks, tools and goobers of the industrialized world have come in search of a new kingdom. They seek a kingdom where their $30,000 a year job makes them look like Bill Gates, their excessive acne scars make them look like they were once warriors in a great battle, and their small, withered testicles seem like goose eggs by comparison to the locals. |
