I'm taking my hiking game to the next level tomorrow to check out some trails and waterfalls around the Niagara Escarpment. Most of the trails are marked so I don't really fear getting lost; however, I've been preparing all week anyway by refreshing my orienteering skills and practicing navigation with a map and compass. The more comfortable I get with it, the deeper into the woods I want to go, lol. |
Get pics.
Hiking is the best, but I'm obviously biased from bird stuff. I never really thought about getting lost though, as an adult, and I haven't done orienteering since high school, haha. I grew up in a rural area directly next to 900+ acres of rainforest, so wandering around in that was almost a daily thing for me as a kid, and I think I developed a mental compass of sorts. I didn't stick to the tracks, and looked for good climbing trees, lol. I always remembered my way, I guess?
If you're into the nature side of things, do yourself a favour and stop every once in a while, when there are no other hikers around, and just sit and listen. Birds, critters, whatever, there's so much going on in a forest that people miss by just walking through without paying attention. Those are the best parts. IMO, obvs
