I lived in Piedmont when I learnt to ski... I was too young, so I don't remember the details. All I know is that a couple of months later I got a small orange sledge, and I loved it. Then one day, as I was sliding down the mountain, I lost control and slid over a couple's picnic. To this day I can close my eyes and see their surprised faces getting closer and closer, realising the blades were about to cut both the butter and the tablecloth

I learned to snowboard and ice skate in Brazil though. Not exactly standard, I s'pose

Actually, I learned just the theory of snowboarding here in Brazil (a guy from Utah I worked with showed me what it is like), and he was a really good teacher, because in less than an hour with the actual board in Japan I was already steady on my feet and doing spins all the time

As for ice skating, yeah, I didn't expect to do it here either. But I did, first in Manaus, right next to the Equator line, and then here in Brasília.

(As for skiing, it was in Piedmont, I lived in Turin as a kid).

I wasn't sure if the Andes caught the western tip of Brazil. I had no idea you grew up in Italy that's why I assumed Piedmont was in Brazil. You're full of surprises.

Actually, your assumption isn't too far off, and I double checked before I wrote this post.

The Andes are exactly where Brazil ends and the Spanish speaking countries start for the most part (except for the 'guays, which are a whole different story). Apparently, that's because we went as far inland as the mountains would let us, and stopped short of climbing them because... our neighbours beat us to it or it would've been too greedy or something. We bought a huge chunk off Bolivia precisely because we settled there in larger numbers, so we saved them the trouble of dealing with insurgents every other year - and, you guessed it, it's just rainforest, no snowy goodness (or earthquakes for that matter, so yay!).

But, yeah, I was born in Brasilia, got pasta'd up in Northern Italy for a couple of years, and after a year long stint in Rio, I came back and I've stayed put ever since, with the occasional trip to Manaus

Well skiing was awesome. Definitely like riding a bike! I was so elated that my skis turned after my first run, lol. Wow, the skis I bought sure are fun. Took a huge chance buying before trying, but I did my research and it paid off.

Mega stoked for Whistler now. Might even try to plan a weekend at Tremblant.

One of my friends from HS lives in Australia now, and she posted a pic on FB last night of a hunstman spider IN HER HOUSE. I didn't think those things were actually real. Jesus fuck, frightening. And I'm not normally bothered by spiders, etc.
