The government hid a law in amongst another law to get it through parliament. Basically it said that anyone who makes any comment about political issues during an election period had to attach their full real name and address.
It covered any written comments, newspaper comments, news websites, blogs, facebook, everything.
Michael Atkinson then went on to claim that there was a blogger who kept making comments who supposedly lived in his electorate. He then went on to claim that the person was a Liberal staff member, it was a fake name and not anyone who lived in his electorate - even going so far to claim he knew everyone who lived in his electorate and he had also checked the electoral role (I would have thought a questionable action in itself).
The newspaper tracked this blogger down, sure enough a real guy, no links at all with the Liberal party, it was his real name, he lived about 2 streets away from Atkinson's electorate office, and this guy's wife had been into the office to have things signed.
We all knew Atkinson was a twat, but the law and him claiming this guy didn't exist was just the icing on the cake. |
Ah that. Yeah, my gf was telling me a bit about it the other day. She didn't have all the background info though. Lol, that's hilarious. And disturbing.
