I know this is going to sound really unhelpful, but it depends, really.

If it's a medicine companion/guide/atlas/what-have-you, I'd first check if I can't find it in a library. If it's too obscure and not even libraries have it, I'd look for a legal download (ebooks are cheaper than books, usually) and, if it's still too expensive for me (a tenth of my monthly wage), then I'd look for an illegal download.

Should I find myself without a single page after all that, I'd wait a whole month and do it all over again. If I still believe I need it after all this time then, well, it's bullet biting time
