I was in Japan for just a month, so it made no sense to buy more clothes as I was short of money (I did rent a skying suit shortly after, but that's about it). Besides, I live in a place where the weather is pretty much the same all year round, so I'm not used to this "winter clothing/summer clothing" difference.

You could just as well page Jay, because what you saw was hail.

Edit: Saw will's reply. I was under the impression snow was formed as the water changes from gas form (ie falls from the clouds), while water droplets (rain) that froze on the way down resulted in hail.

Well then perhaps what was going on today was sleet? I was going by the sound of it as it hit my windows...at any rate, it was terrible and it scared me lol.

Yeah sleet is basically ice pellets. so they're frozen water droplets that are melting as they come in contact with a surface. that's kind of why you'd hear it hitting your windows (it sounds different than just rain)

Too further complicate matters..

Sleet refers to two distinct forms of precipitation:

Rain and snow mixed, snow that partially melts as it falls (UK, Ireland, Australia and Canada).
Ice pellets, one of three forms of precipitation in a US-style "wintry mix", the other two being snow and freezing rain (US).

how bad for business man? dont you have a bajillion students anyway? while you might drive some potential students away, you might sign a few too
