There's no real BETTER way to do it
The way I do it:
I use the Volume control of every channel for finer changements or slow fading. I use the fader for fast changes... But, the volume controls are my favorits

werd...just do what feels right. after enough practice and experimentation you should figure out what fits the occasion. plus dont be afraid to try different things even if you knwo it sound good ... noone will hear you anyway : )

although it is quite easy to get stuck into one way of doing it, keep it fresh!

Like everyone said. Use a combination of things. Sometimes a record may not have been recorded as loud as another, then you'd want to mess with the gain. I generally use the crossfader just to keep oriented where I am in my transition, and the volume faders to keep my levels good. Using all 3, hand in hand, can really lead to smooth transitions. Keep experimenting, you'll find what works best for you.

I haven't confined myself to any set method yet but I do use the crossfader (gradual curve) about 99% of the time. Any cutting of any sort that I do gets done with the eq's.

listen to a tiesto mix next time your completely torn. watch how he mixes in at the peak of every song that how you gotta do it. every song is different too so just go by instinct and mix the way you think will impress the most(i use everything though eqs, cross fader, gain, channel faders)

i love tiesto and i learned to mix by listening to his sets but i dont think that anyone should strive to be like tiesto... tiesto is my favorate dj but i love going to sets from the local scene here becuase all the djs around here are so original with their mixing techinque...occasionally someone does soemthing completely original and amazing. im trying to expand my ways

i stopped using the crossfader a while ago...its too restricitve...i like having control over the volume of each channel rather than making it a set ratio.

I use crossfader and smooth my mix with gain and eq and never use channel faders that on my mixer are always up...
