Talking Break dancing: By any means necessary

Although I'm not a b-boy (nor I plan on becoming one ), I'm willing to learn to break because it's fun and, well, it's better than just work out in a gym

I've been doing some research and I found some really nice guides. However, I first tried to do the mini-flare a couple of times, but I'm having some trouble whenever my legs are off the ground (I don't know whether it's just lack of practice or if I need stronger arms ).

Does anyone here know how to break and could give me some tips? How strong do I need to be?

ps.: These are the guides I'm using...

flares, windmills and other power moves are hard to get, it takes a lot and i mean a lot of practice to get them down. Mills are easy to get down with time but flares are hard as fuck!!! its just understanding how to go about doing it and practice almost daily. My boy has been breaking for about 3 years and he can do about 4-5 flares so its hard to get flares down.

So start out by learning the six step which is essential part of bboying. Then work on footwork, freezes, turtles, swipes, then learn to up rock and put in some power moves to make it look flashy. BUt getting down power moves takes time!!! and a lot of practice. ITs always good to get a friend with the same interest to come with you so you wont get discouraged much

or better yet since you are in brasil take some capoeira classes if you want to get power moves down!!!! and lot of bboys take capoeira, plus its FUN!

Get some video tapes and watch them, battle of the year videos are good, and anyting from rock steady crew is good,

That funny that you ask that tonight, since I go to practice every Weds night for the past three years.

As Taub said, power moves are fairly hard and definitely take alot of practice.

I would suggest learning top rock or up rock (basically bboy "dancing"), then get to the floor and learn the basics of footwork. The six-step is the fondation of bboying, then you progress to freezes and power. I would suggest going to a local bboy practice spot, most likely a gym, dance studio, or house. Get some videos, try here, or download some from a p2p. I learned basically by watching videos and then doing them myself, it helps alot of you have other people interested and want to practice.

There's only one thing I will say, and that is: practice, practice, practice. I've been dancing for about 5 years and still practice twice a week. You can always learn new moves, no matter how good you are.

There's no other way to get better.

Good luck and once you get a power move down, you'll be hooked.

PAyce

Thanks for the tips (lol @ Wasted_Space, cheers mate, now I know alcohol does wonders )

I realised I already knew the 6-step thing, because I learned it when I was a teen and it's pretty much what I know (however, I thought it was a bridge to do the windmill move ). I'm gonna practise it again, and focus first on what you guys said (footwork and all the basics). I don't know where to find b-boys where I live (although I know there are some), so I'll probably stick with capoeira (looking forward to it already) and all the internet guides I've got About the videos, I'm going to look for something here, because it would be expensive as hell for me to import them (maybe, if I get a couple of friends who are also interested, we may share the videos and watch 'em together... this way we'll also get motivation from each other ).

Once again, thanks for all the tips

Has a flash movie that sort of teaches. It is useful because you can pause and use slow motion to see how the move works.

For some insane videos go to:
