hmmm.. here's a solution:
get VirtualDub, load the avi file, save the wav file (file > save wav...), then open it in any sound editor program such as CoolEdit, and do the necessary changes.
download VirtualDub and
CoolEdit
Hope this helps. 
PS: almost forgot the last step... you replace the wav file in VirtualDub by choosing "Audio > wav audio..."
