sorry to make yet another thread.
ive been on the wheels a couple months, feel i have the basics down pretty much, from the beginning i experimented with sampling the next song or "foreshadowing" as i like to call it, i have a vestax pmc-3a mixer which probably limits me quite a bit.

what else can i do to make my mixes better? or do i need a new mixer soon. its only got treble and bass eq.
besides seamless beatmixing and sampling, what else is there to mixing? (or is that it.) i dont hear much else going on in most tiesto, pvd, oaky etc. sets. only coxy and scratching which i wont do yet

Well, for one, if your mixer has a crossfader, set it in the middle and mix using the individual controls. You'll get much cleaner mixes that way. And as for scratching......this is just my personal opinion.....if you haven't started scratching yet....good...don't start. Scratching is stupid and annoying...besides it will tear up your vinyl faster than anything. The true art of DJing does not involve scratching.

and omg its so much easier mixing now.... infinitely smoother and simpler... thanks for that idea

but im thinkin bout other stuff? w/ trance i guess there's not too much quick sampling/splicing type stuff

Well maybe not as much as house & such...but that's not to say that you couldn't.....or shouldn't....buut this is the area where you develope your own style. What amazes me is how many "toys" there are now for DJs. Samplers, sequencers, computers, drum machines....etc.
I'm really from the old school and it was 2 (or 3) turntables, a mixer and that was it. So you learned to get really fast at slappin' on that vinyl, cueing up and mixing. Especially when you're doin' a lot of overlays throught a song. When those records were ending...they were ending! You had to be really on top of it because you didn't have the option of letting a sample loop or anything like that until you got you next song cued up. There were MANY frantic moments, believe me! Anyway, I've gotten off track, here, haven't I?
I'm glad to hear that you took the advice about the crossfader..you'll find that your mixes will be a lot better and you'll have a lot more control.

I've been trying that out too, with the crossfader in the middle. I must admit, I thought it wouldn't help, but it actually does! It really does help the mix.

hmm, could someone explain in greater detail what you mean by placing the crossfader in the center and mixing with the individual controls? although I only have a crappy mixer with no eq (new one soon though)

Sure. What you do is......if your mixer has a crossfader, put it in the middle , so both turntables would be essentially on. Then use your volume controls for turntable 1 and turntable 2 for your mixing.If your playing a song on turntable 1 and want to mix into the record on turntable 2, start bringing up the volume for turntable 2 and (normally) when the volume reaches almost the same level as turntable 1....start bringing down the volume on turntable 1 while still bringing up the volume on turntable 2 (to the desired level).
