1. Paul van Dyk (06/21/03 - 1015 Folsom, SF) - I've seen energy before, but this was the second best club night I have ever experienced. PvD was dancing and going nuts behind the decks - he's supposed to be shy!!!! Got to feel Kryo four times the whole night. And that's all I have to really say about this night - it was just that damn good. State of being ripped that night - 10/10.
2. The Scumfrog (07/25/03 - 1015 Folsom, SF) - This is probably due to how shockingly amazing he was. He totally interacts with the crowd, adds personal vocals to some tracks (and it actually helps the track), plus synth-drums, etc. Played an amazing 4 1/2 hours and said the crowd was so good he actually lost track of time (set was supposed to be 3 hours I believe). Got about $250 in free drinks this night as well as I was a part of a quasi-private party that 1015 Folsom actually setup for me and a rather large group of people I know...started of having to pay but by the end of the alcohol session (can't serve alcho after 2am in Cali!), I was just ordering rounds of shots and drinks and the bartender just pulled out this huge roll of drink tickets (Note, 1015 actually kinda monitors incoming money w/ alcohol dispensing...bartenders there can't hand out tons of free drinks w/o drink tickets). Kryoooo five times!!! State of being ripped- 8/10.
3. DJ Tiesto (06/06/03 - The Mezzanine, SF) - The first time I had been to the Mezzanine as it was new....all I knew about the place is that it supposedly has the best sound system on the west coast...well, that part of the club lived up to the hype The place also feels very underground, which made it more amazing. The night for me and my date that night was completely free. COMPLETELY! Free entry, and a free bar the whole night!!! Note that it was the last stop for Tiesto on the PlayStation 2 Dual Play tour, and I work on the media side of the VG industry --- Sony hooked me up that night...I was actually doing a piece of the industry and using music for marketing, so it was actually work related. Chances are this night could have been the #1 or #2 night .... if it wasn't for the Fire Marshall coming and forcing the club to find ways to pick people out of the place for awhile because it was too packed. We got stuck outside for over and hour. We did get back in right as Tiesto had come on, but I was pretty sober by then and the building of the groove that night was pretty lost. Tiesto ripped the place apart, but I just wasn't able to enjoy it as much as I should have because once we got back in I basically hard to start over on getting the dance groove going. And no Kryo at The Mezz. State of being ripped - Before being kicked out, 9/10....after, 3/10 ... average - 6/10
4. Sasha (07/03/03 - The Mezzanine, SF) - OMG, simply amazing. I really fucked up my hip this night....I mean, really fucked it up. I think I dislocated it, popped it back in, and kept dancing. The next day it was a bit stiff and I had a little limp and I went out dancing (mainly because I had a date)...when I left the club that night my leg was feeling pretty good...after the 20 minute right home, I could barely lift it. My slight limp when to a horrible one and I had little flexibility in my leg for about a week. A week later, the whole back of my right upper-leg started to show bruising. Was soooo dark, kinda gross. I seriously should have seen a doctor. But thankfully, the flexibility is completely back now and the the bruise has pretty much completely faded. Anyhow, getting back to Sasha...Sasha was supposed to come at 1:30am, but didn't come on until close to 3am - but he actually had a good reason. One thing most people there didn't realize is that he was very sick. He actually got food poisening while at his hotel that day....and he still played on his Yacht party and at the club. I am told that between the Yacht set and playing at The Mezz he was basically in the bathroom hurling the whole time. He did look like crap while at the Mezz, but I thought he was just drunk -- turns out he was just real sick. So, MAD respect goes to Sasha. He only played for 2 hours instead of the 3 1/2 he was scheduled for, though But DAAAMMMMNNN, it was an amazing 2 hours The two hours he did play....TEH BOMB. Also got to meet Rudeboy this night as he was up in SF for some reason. State of being ripped -- 8/10.
5. There are just too many others who have been awesome that I've seen over the last couple of months. It has been an insane time....things finally slow down after this weekend.
Note, if you are wondering WTF Kyro is...it's when they blow liquid nitrogen on the crowd to cool things down. Usually a HUGE blast of thick fog fills the room to the point where you can't see your hand if you put it right in front of your face and the temp drops DRASTICALLY. It's gives you a huge rush and the crowd always goes nuts. The name Kryo is from Cryogenics, I believe....but a K is used to give it an edge
Lastly, please remember this - I am pretty ripped right now as I just wrote all that...so if something doesn't make any sense....OH WELL.

Top 3 nights so far in 2003:
3.Mark Farina @ 1015, SF on Memorial Day was very good, funky house all night long. All the trancers were listening to Armin in the main room, so the dancefloor was somewhat clear and Farina tore it up, mixing in his own flavor of hiphop and jazzy tunes for 4 hours.
2.Scumfrog last weekend @ Spundae, LA was incredible. The vocals and loops he used kept the crowd surging for more, and having Seb Fontaine open for you ain't bad either. If only he could have played a longer set (he spun for 2.5 hours, we could have used another 2.5 hours though).
1.Erick Morillo @ Spundae, LA in June (6/14 ??) was musically the best night I've had the pleasure of hearing in over a year. If ever the word 'flawless' was to be used to describe a DJ's set, this was it!

I just saw Mark Farina last weekend at Sno-Drift. OMFG it was so packed, but I stayed there the whole time and was ripppedd....scale, 7/10...he was playing awesome stuff. He plays here again Thursday night at ahuge anniversary party at a club, but I sorta have a date to go to 80s night after an industry party at a club...priorities, man.
Seb Fontaine is shit, usually...sorry. He played here just this past Wednesday at two places and people were happy with him....I shoulda gone. But yeah, Scrumfrom was awesome here too - I think we wore him out the night before he played in LA...he played for 4 1/2 hours (actually al ittle longer) and was jumping up and down a lot.....he lost track of time (he said this verbally!!)
Have never heard Morillo.

Dave, if Morillo ever comes up to SF, be sure to check him out. He was mixing with 3 turntables, 2 mixers, 2 CD-Js, and throwing crazy loops and samples on top of all of that. Spundae had the DJ booth especially set up per his requests, and he mixed the BEST set I've heard in a long long time.
btw, I agree with ya on Seb Fontaine... usually he does suck. But I was pleasantly surprised with his set before Scumfrog @ Spundae LA... he was not only bearable but actually pretty good.

I missed the beginning of Seb's set, but caught the last hour. He was banging away really hard, threw in lots of vocal accapellas on top. The crowd went NUTZ when he dropped Prodigy - Smack My Bitch Up. I thought he opened nicely for Scumfrog, and played on the energy level of the crowd... the main room was absolutely packed to the brim by 11pm (which is rare in LA) and it seemed like everyone was dancing their asses off.
