Yeah Everquest aka. Evercrack is insane. I played it since 1999 and still do but not on the same basis as before.
It takes a good amount of time to build up your character to the stage where you can join a big guild and start killing things suchs as gods and dragons. As soon as you get into these buisness the opportunities are huge. So yes if you want a game to stay into for along time Everquest might be the choice.
On the other hand, the game is quite old and Everquest 2 is coming up soon.. might be worth waiting and check it out.
The pay per month thing is kinda good if you want a long lasting game, the game develops as you play it. The developers comes out with new zones and quests all the time.

WarCraft III ! ! ! ! And it's expansion The Frozen Throne, excellent single player modes. Not too mention great online play. If you've played StarCraft and it's expansion Brood Wars, you'll love WarCraft III...
Although the single player game will only take you about a week or two at most to finish, but playing online almost doubles the fun, and adds a lot of life to the game.

I hate warcraft 3.. I gave it away cause it sucked so much.. It was fun for like a week.. The only thing I liked was the storyline.. You have to be hella good to play multiplayer to be fun..

everquest is very addictive, lots of fun too and you can make enough money playing it to support a healthy record addiction(
and yeah i sucked at wc3 multiplayer too cause its way way way too much micromanagment with all the heroes and such. but some of the different online mods are alot of fun.

everquest is not the only massive multiplayer game. some of the others are quite good. I've played Asheron's call 2 since it came out about 1/2 year ago and it is a similar kind of game. Also Star Wars Galaxies is coming out soon, or it might already be out.
Many games of this type, so you have choices

I suggest The Elderscrolls : Morrowind. It's an RPG, with a pretty good plot, but the strength of the game lies in the fact that you're totally free to do what you want. The land you can travel through is huge (read : it takes more than an hour to cross from one side to the other on foot). Some RPG people dislike this game just because of that. In the beginning of the game you're on your own, you don't know what's happening and you need to find out by yourself. It's totally not like the most RPG's where you basically have to follow the main plot.
