berklee is where i want to go i dont think i have enuff money though seriously

it has all the audio/percussion training ever..such artists as bt and many more came out of there alumni.

if u use it for solo purposes such as producing for yourself you wont make much (if anything at all) but there are producers who need audio engineers and so do lots of companies. its a pretty in demand field. usually good money if you find a job.

tip:train with protools, its the industry standard

You realise that, being a sound engineer you won't work just with the music you like, right? You sometimes will be forced to work with pop, country or even polka.

Anyway, I've been told that it's a nice job. A friend of mine who works with computer was telling me about sound engineering someday and how some guys in Europe were doing great with it. Talk to sound engineers. Look for it on search engines like google and altavista. All I recommend is: research

another piece of information on being an audio engineer...

be prepared to be someone else's bitch. seriously. u have to appease the producer, the artist, the ceo of the record label, and multiple others. if the artist ain't happy, he won't record well. if the producer ain't happy, he won't use u again. if the ceo ain't happy, u ain't getting your money. if this dun sound hard enough, keep in mind, people's musical opinion can vary (check the music discussion forum and u'll get an idea), and more often then not, u'll be doing something u think is shitty just to please the others.

to be a good audio engineer, u need a very very strong drive to keep at it. success in this field don't come in 5-10 years...it comes in 15-20. after all the butt-licking, ass-kissing, and wiping up the shit of others. THEN maybe u'll have a standard base of clients who u might like working with.

as people have said..sometimes a love of music isn't necessarily enough. u gotta really bite the bullet in this field. not trying to scare you, but this is the truth. not just in the states, but worldwide.

pm me if u have anymore questions...i'm gonna graduate from NYU in a year with a degree in Music Technology...and honestly, my career goals since joining have changed dramatically. :P

PS: one last thing, u constantly have to upgrade your studio, which i'm sure u kno will not be cheap.

Yea I agree and understand what binkun is saying. I'm going to College so I can get into this field, and I know it's gonna be hard, but I'm gonna try to innovate and be the expert in my job. that's how you get ahead.... make a good reputation for yourself. I know it's gonna take time, but yea the money is great if you are known for a good product/service quality and you're dedicated. You have to be a people person and a techie person. All the money for the learning is worthwhile in the end if you love what you'll be doing. Try to get into a field of MRI (music and recording industry) that you'll love, otherwise, you'll be in the doghouse for the rest of your life, or until you land better placements. It's a great field for those who like music, but you hafta be good at what you do. and always have abackup plan and a nestegg of money so that you don't go broke or bankrupt.

i'm sorta in a similar boat. I'm at USC and wanting to study to possibly become an audio engineer.
i'm scared though that if i go down that road i'm gonna shoot myself in the foot later on down the road.
theres alot of other stuff i'd like to study (psychology or go pre-med), but music of course is what i have always loved the most.
if i picked one of the other paths i could be almost guarenteed success, but i dunno if i'd be happy with my choice.
or i could go down the music route and more than likely get stuck with a dead end job.

Im attending a B TEC music production course, going into the second year in september, then onto University. Its costing me nothing to participate in this course.

I wouldnt pay to be taught sequencing though, thats silly, although university is a differant thing in the sense of paying.

Would reccomend the B Tec course.
