For those in favour of denoucing hate!

quote:
FRANCE AND GERMANY: RECOGNIZE ALL OF HAMAS AS A TERRORIST ORGANIZATION

The cease-fire that we all hoped would lead to a more peaceful future for Israel and the Palestinians has been shattered by Hamas terrorism. Recently, over a hundred Jewish children and their parents were maimed and massacred in an instant when a Hamas Imam detonated a bomb that destroyed a Jerusalem bus. This latest outrage -- and the failure of the European Union and others to move decisively against terrorism -- means that we must intensify our efforts against Hamas and those who excuse their crimes against humanity.

We at the Simon Wiesenthal Center do not accept that certain world leaders continue to allege that Hamas is a legitimate peace partner even as they continue to mass murder Israeli civilians.

Hamas Supporters shout anti-Israel slogans during a
demonstration, August 21, 2003. UPI News Pictures
Last month, tens of thousands of you joined with the Center in appealing directly to European Commission President Romano Prodi asking that he lead the way in reversing the EU's decision to regard Hamas' political wing as separate from its military wing. To date, we have not received any response from Mr. Prodi or anyone else at the EU.

The EU's silence is inspired, in large measure by the failure of France and Germany to heed the U.S. and England's request to delegitimize Hamas. Indeed, even after the latest horrific attack in Jerusalem, France's top diplomats continue to insist that there is no evidence that Hamas is a terrorist organization and the EU has refused to support efforts to freeze Hamas' assets! We therefore ask you to protest directly to French President Jacques Chirac and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and demand that they treat the totality of Hamas as a dangerous, terrorist entity. The key points of our protest include:

*In June 2003, the European Union vowed that they would reconsider labeling the political wing of Hamas as a terrorist entity if Hamas failed to support the peace process and continued conducting suicide bombings. No such move has yet been undertaken.

*Hamas' very covenant, which invokes the infamous and debunked The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, would violate anti-hate laws in both France and Germany. The Holocaust denial and Jew-baiting would be prosecuted under the anti-hate laws of these democracies. The notion that such an entity, committed to murdering Jews and eliminating Israel, could be treated as a legitimate partner for peace is dangerous and outrageous!

We at the Simon Wiesenthal Center are taking our battle to the leaders of the international community from Capitol Hill to the Foreign Minister of Canada to the OSCE talks in Vienna. Our message is clear: We will not rest until there is a unified and strong commitment from European leaders that Hamas -- all of Hamas, both its political and military wings -- is officially recognized and treated as a terrorist organization.

Can we stop Hamas terrorism? Perhaps not. But together we can demonstrate to an arrogant and forgetful Europe that we will not be silent to their intransigence that encourages more murder of Jews! Your support is essential as the Center fights to expose the truth about Hamas.

You're not totally up-to-date posting that petition Mike:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/3082790.stm

In this piece you will find that

quote:
all EU member states agreed to blacklist the Palestinian militant group Hamas

and

quote:
A consensus has been found to decide to include Hamas on the list of terrorist organisations

On another note: I seem to recall that the Israeli military fired missiles into the palestinean territories barely hours after the "historic" meeting of Sharon, Abbas, and Bush. Thus, I wouldn't say that

quote:
The cease-fire that we all hoped would lead to a more peaceful future for Israel and the Palestinians has been shattered by Hamas terrorism.

it's a joint effort.

I'd love for you to provide a source for that.

I don't recall the "missiles", but i do recall a few mortar shell incidents by hamas, and a handful of stabbings. Ohh, how about that family that was stabbed to death.

I got the news from danish TV, and their websites do not provide access to news dating more than a month back. I tried searching other sites but the problem is that "israeli air strike" generates a lot of hits.
I did manage to find the following:

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2003...ain555980.shtml

which states:

quote:
The week after the June 4 launch of the "road map" plan for an end to bloodshed and creation of a Palestinian state by 2005 was marred by Israeli air strikes and a Hamas suicide bombing in Jerusalem, killing and wounding scores on both sides.

However, I'll readily admit that it does not *explicitly* state that the air strike happened first. So as I haven't been able to find any solid sources and have decided that 30 minutes of my life dedicated to this purpose must be more than enough, I guess that the conclusion is that it never happened.

But regarding the rest of my previous post: I though that the news from Europe would make you happy, Mike?

I notice that the maintainers of the Wiesenthal site hasn't been following the news. Perhaps they are waiting for the official "response from Mr. Prodi or anyone else at the EU".
Seeing that the letter is dated 9th of september and the news I referred is dated 6th, I think it is fair to warn against organizations who are more keen on banging war drums than trying to get the full picture. They shouldn't be trusted unconditionally IMO.

As most that have been following the crisis extremely closely will note that the Israeli Air Force strike on Hamas happened just hours after the initial Palestinian suicide attack. Occrider (who I expect has been following the hudna), perhaps could clarify what information he may have on the matter. I am however pretty certain no Israeli military action took place first.

Also, please note to whom this letter is addressed to. When these two leaders make announcements they usually make them personally when something this major is involved. No "official" response was given by either leader thus leading me to believe it's not set in concrete - which shouldn't even be a question!

The Israeli government's startling announcement that the Palestinian perpetrators of the (Sept. 9) dual terror attacks in Tsrifin (7 murdered, 30 wounded) and Jerusalem's Caf¨¦ Hillel (8 murdered, 50 wounded) were both, just six months ago, released from administrative detention in an Israeli prison.
