i seem to think that bout 8-10 years ago, where dance music came into play, a lot of ppl who go to the clubs enjoyed the music. But as years gone by with all the super clubs etc., its seperated into a market of superleague djs and ones who proper stand out. And it seems like the market has collapsed in terms of ppl these days will only go if a night hosts a very well known dj, and in a lot of cases, big names. Half the others times, ppl just can't be assed anymore. Really seems to be that way I think...

what are ppl's views here?

think i told you my view on it before, its true everything has just collapsed since the height of popularity into superclubs going as far as to jsut book the same dj's to garauntee crowds. big name dj's still wanting playing fees the same as before even though there is no market for it anymore, and even the crowds have jsut got ignorant, or how i put it, the americanisation syndrome, its all about one person and they cant be bothered with nobody else.

this isnt entirely true of course as goes for most people here but you knwo what i mean, the passes who give the clubs the cash to make them carry on.

It saddens me in a way that I started clubbing so late in my time as a trance addict .. around 4yrs now since I found the music I so love today .. that the people I have come to know now of this board are slowly growing tired of the clubbing experience and that organisations like gatecrasher seem to rely on money making events solely these days ..

Its a real shame how things have become .. where events are judged by the lineups and the price .. gone seems to be the atmosphere and atitude that can be looked back upon when trance kicked off properly b4 this "commercialism" took ahold of it in the later years .. id like to have a time machine to go back to the days where going out meant having a good time with ur friends .. and enjoying the music regardless of who was playing ..

I aint usually the type to take down tracklists at a club / festival etc (not that id remember anyhow) .. tbh Id much prefer to hear tracks ive never heard before .. perhaps thats where the problem lies these days .. too many ppl are able to keep upto date with the music? If you get what I mean here .. in that you know what you like and what you dont .. and should the dj play something you dont like .. well thats your night ruined .. dare you ever attend an event with him(her?) in the lineup again

But I suppose the flip side also exists .. hope that nights like pause motion etc can bring back what has been lost .. I guess thats why the subject for having a house party instead of going to a club is so popular amongst some ..

Anyhow this is getting a bit long and no1s gonna read it anyhow .. watched human traffic (dont know how i missed it) and that has opened my mind a bit on certain things ..

it's all gone tits up because of the DJ's
having 5 or 6 DJ's on in a night is too many, it doesn't flow properly. The best nights I've been to is when it's been 2 or 3

i dunno, but way before i started going to 'super clubs' i used to go to small nights in London a lot and they were way more fun in some ways. i dont know if it is still the same but they only cost a few quid and were much more friendly and less up their own arse- with the average clubber being a bit older and with loads of australians just over here to have fun!

they weren't big name dj's (although some of them have gone on to become such) but i had a better time there.

It does seem to be more about the DJ rather than the music which is disappointing. Some people dont like the fact that all the big name DJ's arent in the country for new years and reckon the line-ups for the different places are shite. Last year i was at Garlands for new years eve, the music was funky house and was good, but i had such a good time cause i was out with all my m8s in one place having a gr8 time.

This could be a reason why its hard for new DJ's to break onto the scene.

People dont wanna see some new person play the same music as tiesto, they wanna see tiesto play that music regardless of the fact that he may be just as good.

Hmm i dont know about that .. I just think the bigger name djs have a reputation .. imo theres a fear that a "new" dj wont be able to hold the crowd as well ..

At the end of the day .. looking back at gc 9th bday .. i didnt really get to see any of the djs playing since i was in the foyer .. but I had a good time and the music was good .. would it have mattered to me if it wasnt pvd or marcov on the decks? Not really ..

geeeeeeeezzzzzaaaaa, how did u manage that u joker, was chuffed when I finally replaced by lost version on video for about 6 squid a couple of months ago....shoulda waited for the cheap as chips dvd sale by the sounds of it. What ever happened to human traffic two and those peeps who won the chance to be in it in those mixmag comps??

Agree with most of what Cru5ad3r says by the way. The Cult of the superstar dj was great when it was gathering force. Loads of exciting new djs suddenly getting famous all at once and not even just famous within clubland. Packed clubs with everyone wanting a piece of dance music and it going off all over the country. Think that cult got too big and whereas the mainstream started embracing clubbing at its peak that also took away from things to an extent.

Conciously or subconciously we all look for the dj name now when we first look at a flyer and feel this in itself will make it a worthy night and are reluctant to go to a night unless the dj has a reputation on a national or even international scale. I do it even though I've had some of the best nights of my life in at small nights or listening to a dj I did not know about or I didn't know was on that night. However, because of such reluctance the smaller nights all died and now the new energy and momentum is not coming through in the scene like it used to. Meanwhile some people are starting to get bored seeing the same superstar djs over and over but paying more and more to do so but have little else to fall back on. Club owners are starting to realise they can make more without paying inflated dj's fees and turning back to pop and selling more booze and less water. The legacy we have now is a tad depressing at times with the likes of Cream and Crasher a shadow of their former selves (even though still putting on occassional, very decent nights or festiees).

In a nut shell before I bore myself as well as anyone still reading this rant - acid house came to the uk and the dance seen got bigger and bigger and u were a part of something amazing; the trance sound arrived in earnest and the same was true again. Interest in the music got bigger and bigger and reached fever pitch but interest in individual djs (always has been that to an extent, right back to chicago days) started becoming more of a priority and then the djs names started becoming more of a priority than just what they did on the nights. It isn't their fault this became a problem and like footballers, if u felt u could demand more money most peeps probably would. It needs interest in the music to start spreading again throughout the country if things are gonna buck up and it is gonna take more than just one new superstar dj for that to happen.

It all runs in cirlces and I think trance, house etc will boom again but it is never as big as the first boom and the first real dance driven clubbing boom in the UK was fecking great (the bits I caught of it).

I guess in a way some of the current popularity of edm music has to die away before it can hope to return to a state it once was in the past .. if ppl start to attend smaller parties more and more then the bigger organisations will either go bankrupt or will have to seriously rethink their strategies ..

Do clubs really make that much money off bar sales here in the uk? Besides the initial purchase of water for the majority ..
