So I play dvds on my pc, why is the sound so quiet and bad?

When a movie starts, when the "paramount pictures presents" screen is coming up, the sound is stunning, perfect quality!
Then when the actual movie begins the sound is very bad
I have a 5.1 speaker system which blows my windows if I pump up the volume, but why is the sound of the dvd so crap?
I would say my dvd player sucks or so, but the sound is perfect when the paramount presents... is coming up

Can anyone help me?

Might be macrovision or copy protection issues.

What DVD software are you using to view the movies?

I have the same deal going with me. I use Cyberlink Power DVD that my Dell came with. The sound is good, its just it doesn't go very loud at all. I don't know why? Only with the DVD too, MP3's and everything else are much louder.

my suggestions are

a) replace your dvd player
b) replace your dvd software
c) update video card drivers

If the sound is shitty and the video is artifacting (blocky looking choppy frame progression) try making sure DMA is enabled.

my advice:

... buy a fuckn tv dvd player.. looks better with the poor mans AA anyway.. and usually much bigger viewing surface, and hassle free!

What does the video card have to do with sound? If anything you'd want to update sound card drivers.

Also, DVD on PC isn't that bad. I have a 21" TV and an 17" monitor on the PC so it's not much of a gain watching it on TV. Plus I got a Klipsch ProMedia 5.1 sound system on my PC.

I figured somebody would ask, and as far as I know, in DVD-video everything is ran through the decoder (on your video card or possibly piggybacked off your video card) before it is outputted on your sound card, though I may be (severely) mistaken in this belief.

Most people's home stereo is in most respects superior to their computer's audio output capabilities and arguing that it looks better on your computer is a ridiculuous thing to do although if your tv is of similar size of your monitor the difference might be negligible. And finally, dvd playback ties up your computer which kind of sucks (although I doubt your going to be watching a movie and doing something on your computer simultaneously).

WinDVD 5 Platinum (what I use) has a feature where you can play the movie on your desktop. Pretty cool feature IMO.
