Mixing Basics

Hi, i'm just getting started in making mix cd's and i have a few questions (I'm using Acid 4.0 by the way, i have to use a comp until i save for TT's). How close does the BPM of each track (the 2 being mixed) have to be? I've found that tacks that are more then 8 BPM apart are near impossible to make a solid switch. Also, what is the avergae (i know this varies form track to track) does the actual fade/mix last? 30s, 15s?
Also, any tricks for making a smoother transition between tracks then just a crossfade?

Thanks guys

I'll answer it 'cos you're from Benoit's hometown, since this topic is frequent and you should use the search button
Anyways, transitions can be as long as you want them to be, usually they are around 1:30 - 2 mins in trance, and can be up to 3 mins in prog, but that's not a rule, do whatever sounds best (that's rule #1). As for the BPM issue, tracks pitched down or up in a big % ratio tend to sound "different", sometimes awful yeah, but you can mix anything from any tempo, if they sound good. just experiment. As for the crossfader, I never mixed with Acid, and I have TTs and CDJs, but acid must have some sort of EQing plug-ins so that you can lower one track's bass while adding some to the incoming's bass etc, most DJs never use the crossfader anyways, they tend to use the EQ knobs so maybe you can do the same with Acid. Good luck
