Where is trance headed?

I'm not too knowledgeable on where the trance scene is headed on a global and North American scale. What is the general type of trance music that is being produced and played these days?

Is euphoric, epic trance still being produced on a large scale? What type of music is being played at massives and in the European scene?

I ask because it seems as I'm following albums that are released in later years, they tend to be coined "progressive" which seems to mean much more beat focused music with less/little/no melody. Although I enjoy those albums for what they are, they definitely have less of that instant feel good appeal that soaring melodies inspire.

It seems that the West Coast is driven by house music. As much I try to really like house music, it's just not there for me. It's something in the sound of the beats in progressive, trance and techno that pulls me in every time in a way that house can never come close.

One of my ultimate musical dreams is to hear a live set like DJ Tiesto's Magik 6 Amsterdam or Armin Van Buuren's Transparance 004 at a great venue. Are these musical styles still played or are they things of the past?

There is still tons of uplifting being produced, too much IMO but these uplifing productions are usually pretty good. However, the sound now a days will never come close to any of the epic tracks Tiesto spun during his Magik 6 set but the genre is forever evolving.

I personally see trance heading towards the Perry O'Neil, Ozgur Can and Markus Shulz style of progressive productions.

Trance evolves, its also going to change dramatically over the next couple of years. A lot of DJs who used to (and still do) produce and spin trance are starting to change their tastes.

I mean, like Corona said, lots of people are shifting to the Markus Schulz, Perry O'Neil, Ozgur Can, Chris Micali style of progressive trance. Heck, I keep saying it, but a lot of what Armin's been playing lately follows suite (not that it's a bad thing, just a comment).

I think trance will branch over the next year into three main categories. You've got your uplifting. You've got the progressive beats with trance melodies (I call it progressive trance, duh). Then you've got the uplifting trance with a hard edge. I think Sonofapitch, Octagen (aka ReLocate) group are underrated as producers. There's also Odyssee and Filo & Peri (admitedly F&P are uplifting but they have a taste of that harder synth that floats in their tracks less pronounced).

In North America, the markets just don't support trance and if they ever do, it won't be for like 3-5 years, and with the way the markets here work, they'll overkill it, they'll spin it like they've brought the latest and greatest sound to the continent, and make all of us who already listen and love this music absolutely sick to our stomachs. I mean, do we really need our local stations playing ATRC (As the Rush Comes) 25 times a day?

That's one thing I like about other trance listeners, at least those I've met. And I don't mean 'raver kids' who just come out to get high, I mean true listeners. It's a completely different attitude than you might see of a group who listen to a different genre. There's a measure of respect and openness amongst djs, producers and fans. Rather than always worrying about penny pinching, most if not everyone does what they do because they love it.

I honestly hope that trance never becomes mainstream in North America, our corporate lifestyle/consumerism would just kill it for me.

Epic and euphoric trance will always be produced. However, I think the new tendency is for DJ's (alike PvD, Corsten, Tiesto) to mix this type of trance with harder beats such as techno, electro and breaks to eliminate the flatness of a purely uplifting trance set. I'm a promoter of this evolution, however, some purists resist this amalgamation of styles.

As for your ultimate musical dream.....save your money and head to Ibiza....It is definitely the summer epicentre of electronic music. You will be able to hear amazing DJs spin live sets nightly in unimaginable settings surrounded by wonderful, beautiful people. In fact, Armin Van Buuren is taking a residency with Godskitchen this year and out of all the superstar DJ's, I think he spins the type of trance you are seeking. If you want to get a taste of what Ibiza is like, download "Ibiza's Children" in the Music Videos section of this site. It was produced by a fellow TA.

I have to disagree a bit, I would personally like to see trance specifically, as well as electronica in general, become more mainstream in North America.

Nothing would make me happier than being able to head out to a "regular" club and hear some trance being spun by a decent DJ (as opposed to the generally horrific ones present in many Top 40 clubs).

This is actually the first year in a long time that I've had some hope for the scene in my hometown, particularly with United teaming up with Escape to host a series of headliner DJs. With enough of these events, I'm really hoping to see interest in trance gradually pick up again.

Ibiza is expensive as fuck. Go to a festival in Holland.
