What's with this stupid food tax?

http://www.nomealtax.ca/

They want to start taxing food that is under 4 dollars if you buy it at school, cafeteria, hospital or restaurant.

So if you buy a donut and a coffee at Timmie's you will get charged another 8 percent on top of everything else.

wtf, that would be so crappy. I dont know about anybody else, but living on my own, Ive lost enough weight as it is from the "I cant afford to eat" diet. This is totally wrong and unfair IMO.

In addition, all the healthy foods are under 4 dollars, you can pick up apples oranges, fruit juices, etc for under a dollar even, but if you to to mcdicks or any fast food place, you get a combo thats already over 4 dollars. Something like this will definitely increase the fast food chains sales, making people more likely to eat fast food much much more and people becoming more overweight. I can see Canada's obesity rate increasing like that of the US as an indirect result of this.

Pure Crap.

there are lots of things that they are going to start taxing this way. If you want to buy just a chocolate milk or ice tea in the corner store you will get taxed. Or a fucking chocolate bar.

It is supposed to be a "fat tax" designed to recover some of the health care costs as a result of people pounding back Big Mac's all day long.

The problem is - it doesn't tax just unhealthy food. You buy an apple or banana on your lunch - you gotta pay tax. You buy a salad - you pay tax.

This is why I would lever vote for the provincial liberal party - their intentions seem to be good - but they generally f**k things up in the details.

-----

Plus - doesn't anybody remember the promise "we will not raise taxes for the people of ontario"???

Christ - I already pay alot of tax (including income, gst and pst) and now I gotta pay more?

Just because they don't increase my income tax - doesn't mean they aren't increasing taxes.

IMO there should be outrage with this type of activity.

however in all honesty in light of walkerton and the meat inspection scandals.. the coservative provincial party hasnt proven a whole lot better.. by the way.. lest we forget it was they who left us with the 5billion dollar debt. SO if liberals aren't good, and conservatives aren't either.. who the hell do we vote for? NDP? yea right!

by the way RJ... if we're talking income tax, please shed some light on the 50% amount..
I thought if you made between $0-7850 your not taxed at all..

between 7850-40000(something like that) its 18%

and then from $40-65 its something like %30 on the difference between 40 and 65.. not on the entire amount.

and it gets progressively higher, correct me if i'm wrong.

Of course! How right you are! Because some idiot decides to falsely report water tests it MUST be the conservative's fault.

quote:
lest we forget it was they who left us with the 5billion dollar debt.

The only reason it is 5 billion is because the Liberal party refuses to part with 2.2 billion worth of provincially owned property (which the Conservatives planned on doing) so as far as I see, the deficit is only 2.7 billion.

Plus - the general auditor of ontario has said they expect anywhere from 1.5 to 1.9 billion in additional tax revenues this year as a result in the improvement in the economy - which the Liberals also seem to refuse/ignore. So as far as I see it the deficit is actually 0.8 billtion to 1.2 billion.

Considering SARS (which had an estimated financial impact of over $700 million) and the blackout (which had an estimated financial impact in excess of $200 million) - a deficit of 0.8 billion to 1.2 billion is completely reasonable in my opinion.

Even if the Liberals didn't sell the provincial assets - we'd be looking at 3.1 to 3.5 billion (5 minus the additional 1.5 to 1.9).

------

Lets all watch the Liberals now spend themselves deeper beyond the 0.8 to 1.2 billion (or even 3.1/3.5 billion) all the way up to the 5 billion JUST SO THEY DON'T LOOK LIKE THEY WERE LYING (and so they can give hand outs to the labour unions who put them in office).

Any gov't that would lie about the deficit isn't a gov't I'd ever vote for.

right you are.. however selling the LCBO to get out of debt is the not the right answer. It makes a billion in profit a year not including alcohol sales tax which is around $300 million. Selling profitable provincially owned corps and or property isnt the right way to do things. Let's use CN rail as an example (i know its federal but still) CN rail was hugely profitable, however VIA is not! So they sold CN rail, and all the rail lines to a private consortium, now CN rail gouges VIA enormous prices to use CN rail lines. I'm all for free market enterprise but c'mon thats just a stupid thing to do.

SO we're sitll looking at least 4 billion in debt if we don't include SARS and the blackout thats unaccounted for.

p.s you forget a rebuttal to the beef inspection scandal.. I love hearing how 1 man is the scapegoat not whether the entire administration is responsible...
